📚 Reading Books

We love sharing stories and developing a love of reading in our class!

Reading is an important part of every school day. As a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 class, we support children to develop their reading skills, confidence and enjoyment of books at a level that is right for them.

  • Storytime: Every day, the children will enjoy listening to and sharing a story with the class teacher. We love discovering new books, talking about our favourite characters and exploring new vocabulary together.

  • Reading Practice: All children will take part in regular reading practice sessions using a carefully selected, phonetically decodable book matched to their current reading level.

Our reading practice focuses on three important skills:

Read 1: Decoding — Using phonic knowledge to recognise, blend and read words accurately.

Read 2: Prosody — Developing fluent reading by using expression, appropriate phrasing and intonation.

Read 3: Comprehension — Talking about the text, answering questions and developing a deeper understanding of what has been read.

Your child will bring their reading book home on Friday so that they can continue to practise and develop their reading skills with you at home.

📖 Library Books

Wednesday is our library day!

Each Wednesday, your child will have the opportunity to choose a library book to take home and enjoy.

Library books are chosen for reading for pleasure and are not necessarily matched to your child's reading level. Your child may therefore need you to read some or all of the book to them. This is a lovely opportunity to share a story together, talk about the pictures and characters, and encourage a love of books.

Please remember to return your child's library book so that they can choose a new one.

🤸 PE Days

Our PE days are Wednesday and Friday.

Please remember:

  • Children should come to school wearing their PE kit on PE days.

  • PE kit should consist of black joggers or leggings, a white T-shirt or polo shirt and trainers.

  • No earrings or jewellery should be worn on PE days.

🏠 Homework Challenges

Homework gives the children an opportunity to practise and consolidate the learning we have been doing in school.

Homework books will be sent home on Friday and should be returned to school on Monday.

Each week, the children will be given a Homework Challenge linked to their learning. We encourage children to have a go as independently as possible, although a little help and encouragement from an adult is always welcome!

As we are a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 class, homework may sometimes be adapted to make sure that it is appropriate for your child's year group and stage of learning.

⭐ Things to Remember

  • Please bring your bookbag to school every day.

  • Try to read at home every day if possible – even a few minutes makes a difference!

  • Remember to bring your library book back for Wednesday.

  • Come to school in your PE kit every Wednesday and Friday.

  • Check our class blog regularly to see what we have been learning and all the exciting things we have been getting up to!

We are looking forward to a fantastic year of learning, exploring, reading and growing together in our Year 1 and Year 2 class.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to Mrs Denney, Miss Child or another member of the Key Stage One team.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Denney & Miss Child 🌟
