The children have had a fantastic start to the new school year, and we are really pleased with how well they are settling into their new class and routines.
Each week, we will share a short blog giving you an overview of what we have been learning. We hope this will help you talk to your child about their week and give them opportunities to share and consolidate their learning at home.
📚 English
This week, we have been reading King Lion by Emma Yarlett. The children have really enjoyed exploring the story, making predictions about what might happen next and taking part in hot-seating activities. We have also discussed the character of Lion and thought carefully about how he might feel when he does not have a friend.
In our writing, we have been focusing on writing clear and complete sentences. The children have been using our sentence checklist to help them remember the important features of a good sentence.
🔢 Maths
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme and have begun our first topic, Place Value.
The children have been developing their understanding of numbers by recognising tens and ones, using place value charts and learning how numbers can be partitioned. As we are a mixed Year 1 and Year 2 class, the children have been working with numbers appropriate to their year group and stage of learning.
🎨 Curriculum
This week, we were introduced to the artist our class is named after – Andy Goldsworthy. We explored some of his amazing artwork and discovered how he uses natural materials such as leaves, stones, sticks and flowers to create his pieces.
Inspired by Goldsworthy's work, the children enjoyed using materials found outdoors to create their own natural art and patterns.
💛 PSHE
In PSHE, we have been focusing on two of our important Class Dojo rules: Kind and Polite.
The children discussed what it means to be kind and polite and explored different ways that we can show kindness and good manners towards others in our classroom and around school.
🤸 PE
In PE, the children have been developing their teamwork and fundamental movement skills.
During our team-building lesson, the children worked together to complete different activities and reflected on what their team did well and how they could work even better together.
We have also been practising a range of fundamental movement skills, helping the children to develop their coordination, control and confidence.
⭐ A fantastic first week!
We are very proud of how well the children have started the year and are looking forward to another exciting week of learning in Goldsworthy Class!
