Phonics for Parents - Little Wandle
Phonics Overview for Parents
At Pentland Infant and Nursery School, we aim for all our children to become fluent, confident readers who are passionate about reading. Children who read regularly or are who are read to regularly have the opportunity to open the doors to so many different worlds. More importantly, reading will give your child the tools to become independent life-long learners, so it is an invaluable skill.
At Pentland Infant and Nursery School, we use Little Wandle Letters and Sound Phonics to give your child the best possible start with their reading journey. This webpage includes links and information about the Little Wandle programme which you may find useful. Miss Child is our Phonics Leader, so if you have any specific questions then please get in touch.
Little Wandle has lots of resources to support parents which can be found here: https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
This webpage is designed to give you an idea of what is expected at the phase your child is working within and how their learning can be supported at home. There are a number of booklets and guides included which provide an overview of Phonics at Pentland; these can be downloaded from the file section below.

Phonics at Pentland
In EYFS and KS1 your child will be taught phonics though discrete, daily lessons. Alongside the teaching of phonics, every child will be provided with daily opportunities to apply their phonic knowledge and skills in reading and spelling. Additional keep up sessions will be given to identified children. Phonics remains the main strategy that we use to approach/decode unfamiliar words and spelling across the school. For further information, please see the 'Phonics and Early Reading' section on our school webpage.
