Welcome To class Hepworth
Date: 18th Sep 2025 @ 5:24pm
A hugh welcome to all parents and children to class Hepworth!
This year all classes are named after a famous artist and we are lucky to be named after an artist local to Wakefield - Barbra Hepworth.
Visit the Hepworth gallery in Wakefield or the Yorkshire Sculpture park to view some of her amazing artwork.
Over the past few weeks the children have been busy getting to know their new teacher and class mates and learning all about their class artist. We created some amazing models in the style of Barbra Hepworth using playdough or wooden blocks - keep a look out for pictures on the website!
The children have enjoyed reading the book 'The Lonely Beast' and will continue to learn about his adventures over the next few weeks. They have really enjoyed predicting what the Lonely Beast will do next and sequencing the story.
Phonics
Reception started phonics lessons this week. They learnt that a phoneme is the sound a letter makes and a grapheme is the way it is written. They have focused on the GPCs: s, a, t, p.
Year One are recapping previously known sounds and using and applying them in their reading and writing.
Maths
Reception have been learning about matching objects and shapes and how things can be the same or different.
Year One are currently working on place value up to 10 and have been learning to read and write numbers as written words. They have been learning to count backwards from different starting points and using resources to help them say one more or one less of a number.
In Science the Year One children have been learning to name different parts of the body and this week we will learn about our five senses.
In Reception we have been getting to know the different areas of the classroom and have been talking about our feelings. thinking about what makes us happy and what to do if we feel sad. We had lots of fun reading the colour Monster!
Next week the Year 1 children will begin Reading practise sessions and will be able to take a phonically decodeable book home with them on Friday.
Library books have been changed and will go home every Wednesday. Please remember to bring book bags into school everyday.
Reading books and library books will only be sent home if the children have a bookbag to carry them in.
Home work will go home every Friday and will be collected in on Monday morning.
