The Early Years Foundation Stage

Every child deserves the best possible start to life and here at Pentland we have a caring and vibrant Early Year's Foundation Stage Unit to help your child begin their educational journey. Staff work carefully alongside parents to ensure that all the children here are happy, secure and confident learners.

We have an inclusive, exciting and stimulating learning environment, that allows us to capture the interest and curiosity of our children and cater for the developmental and learning needs of them all, from Pre-School through to Nursery and Reception. Children are offered a high quality range of play and learning opportunities each day, which are carefully planned by our skilled adults to meet their emerging developmental and learning needs. Our children experience a carefully balaned range of child initiated, play based learning opportunities and focused learning activities that are gently guided and scaffolded by adults to help them achieve their fullest potential.

Teaching and learning is planned carefully using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum; this is the statutory framework that sets out children’s learning and development in the Foundation Stage.  Our aim is to help children develop a broad range of knowledge and skills which form an important foundation for their future good progress throughout school and life.

Much of the learning within the EYFS is play-based and experiential in nature.  The curriculum is designed to be flexible so that staff can follow your child's unique needs and interests.

Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside.

Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through seven areas of learning and development.

The 3 Prime Areas of Learning are:

Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

These are the skills that underpin learning accross all subject areas. We have a strong focus on building solid foundations in these areas in the Early Years. The prime areas are the early building blocks that need to be in place in order for children to flourish and recieve the best education possible during their time here at Pentland and beyond.

The 4 Specific Areas of Learning are:

Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design

These are the skills and knowledge that are more specifically taught and developed when children have become confident in the prime areas of learning. At Pentland Infat and Nursery school we are commited to providing our children with a broad and balanced curriculim which celebrates success and talent in all different areas of learning.
