Art & Design

Intent

?At Pentland Infant and Nursery School we believe that Art stimulates children’s creativity and imagination which is a vital to create a well-rounded education and offer children an outlet for their creativity and well-being. We want our children to enjoy art in all its forms and believe they have the potential to produce work that is appreciated and valued.

The art curriculum will develop children’s critical abilities, as well as an understanding of their own and others’ cultural heritages through the study of a diverse range of artists. Our schemes of work aim to inspire children, from the early years, to develop a sense of creativity, self-expression and help develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of Art.

Implementation

Children?learn by being exposed to the Arts and given the chance to experience and participate in a range of creative activities and first hand experiences with local artists. In Pentland we implement the national curriculum as well as incorporating cross curricular cornerstone topics to create a curriculum which is personalised for the children. Vocabulary is a focus and lessons are planned to provide maximum opportunities for children to analyse the use of vocabulary and develop their expressive language.

Lessons are always practical in nature and encourage experimental and exploratory learning; using sketchbook to document ideas. Children will learn by experimenting in a ‘safe’ environment where there are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ results,?thus,?both self-expression and self-esteem may be enhanced. Children will have the opportunity to learn and practice skills discretely and key skills are revisited to allow pupils to revise and build on their previous learning.

In the EYFS there is continuous provision of Art and design opportunities: these activities make important contributions to children’s development in the areas of Expressive Arts and Design and Communication and Language. They are also important in children’s Personal, Social and Emotional development. Art is covered in Art lessons, continuous provision and as a means of communication and learning in other curriculum areas.???

Impact

The impact of our Art and Design curriculum is that our children will develop an awareness of the emotional impact the Arts have on themselves and on an audience. They talk enthusiastically about their experiences in Art and can share examples of work which they are proud of.

Children leave?Pentland school having been exposed to a full range of inspiring Artists and designers; which have helped develop their knowledge and skills enabling them to experiment, invent and create their own works of Art, craft and design. They will have the confidence and language to express themselves creatively and have a life-long appreciation of the Arts.
