Oliver Jeffers- week beginning 13th November

Date: 20th Nov 2023 @ 7:58am

REMINDER:  A big thank you to all the parents and families who came to parents evening this week.

If you we unable to attend parents evening on Wednesday 15th November don't worry as parents evening will continue this Wednesday 22nd November. If you have not already done so, please book an appointment for parents evening. Please ask a member of the office staff if you need any help with this.

We started the week thinking about how we are all different and how this makes us special and unique. We celebrated our differences by wearing odd socks on Monday for ‘Odd Sock Day.’ We thought about how people can say unkind things to others for being different, how this makes us feel and what we could do to be kind and show respect to all.

English

In English this week we have been continuing our work on Remembrance Day. We created our own Rememberance day poems thinking very carefully about our choice of words. We have a selection displayed in our classroom which you can see on Parents Evening.

Maths

This week our Year 1s  in Math have learnt about the term subtraction and how to write the symbol. We continued to use the part part whole model to assist us in working out a simple subtractions. We learnt how we start with the whole number when subtracting and take away one of the parts. We also learnt about the fact families and how using the same whole number and two parts to make 4 different number sentences eg

2+3=5

3+2=5

5-2=3

5-3=2

The children also learnt how to cross out a part of an amount to get the answer. We have been thinking about giving reason to our answer and explaining how to do something to a partner or adult to help in our understanding.

Our Year 2s have been practising their addition and subtraction skills.

Science

Our Year 1s  have continued to learn about the weather and the four seasons and what things happen in each season. Our Year 2s have been grouping objects, things that are alive, were once alive and have never been alive.

PE

In PE with have continued to work with the sports coach Bryn and we have also been developing our balls skills, throwing and catching with a partner and on our own.

RE

Last weekend it was the Hindu festival of light known as Diwali.

We learnt about why and how Diwali is celebrated and had lots of creative fun taking part in different art and design activities associated with Diwali.
