Week commencing 18th September 2023

This week we have launched our new story 'Lonely Beast'. We started the week by looking at a picture from the story with lots of people running away from the Beast. We talked about what was happening in the picture and how the different characters might be feeling and why. We then introduced the front cover where the children learned the title of the story. We talked about how their thoughts might have changed from seeing the initial picture and thinking that the Beast was scary to then learning that he was called 'The Lonely Beast' and what this might mean. After beginning to read the story where we find out that because the Beast is feeling lonely then he decides to go on an adventure to find some friends, we then used our prediction skills to think about where he might go to next. When writing our predictions we focused on using conjunctions to explain why we thought this. We then developed our oral retelling skills by telling the story in our own words to a partner, ensuring that we used time adverbials such as then, next, at last, soon, suddenly. The children then sequenced the different parts of the story before using their writing skills to write out the story in their own words.

In maths we continued our work on place value, writing numbers in words and partitioning numbers into their tens and ones. Next week we will be looking at using a number line to estimate where a given number would fit onto it.

In PSHE we recapped on our emotional check in and talked about what the different emotions meant. We then introduced the feeling of being 'Lonely' and talked about what this meant and when we may feel it. In computing we explored the chrome books, using 'sketchpad' to create different pictures, experimenting with the different tools and effects that we could create. We learned how to turn off the chrome books safely.

In Geography we began to think about where in the world we are and talked about our local area, we used Google Earth to look at our school and then talked about where our school is in relation to the United Kingdom.
