Anthony Browne - Week Commencing 9th OCtober

Date: 14th Oct 2023 @ 9:52am

We have had another fun an exciting week in Anthony Browne Class

English

In science we have been learning all about our senses and in Geography we have been learning all about the school and our surroundings. We decided to compine these and this week the children (and staff) went on an Autumn walk around school. We used our senses  and thought about what we could see, hear, smell and touch while on are walk. The children came up with some amazing ideas and were so excited about what all the Autumn things we found.

We used our Autumn walk to inspire us in English to create and perform our very own poems based on the book we have been reading 'What a Windy Day'. The children learnt the new words adjective and nouns and played the fun game where some children had an adjective and had to find a partner who had a noun. We had lots of funny compinations like a pink doctor, a cheeky school, a happy dog, a tall hat. Try playing the game at home and see what compinations you come up with.

The children then made a list of Autumn words based on what we saw on Autumn walk. They worked in groups to think of a sutiable adjective for the Autumn words - crunchy leaves, spiky grass, tall trees, etc. We then used these to make our own poems.

The children will practise their poems next week ready to perform to the class.

Homework this week is to go on an Autumn walk with your family - take pictures to show the class and find some Autumn things to bring to school on Monday to share with us all. I'll be out doing my own Autumn walk with Milllie, seeing what we discover to show the children.

Maths

In Maths we have been learning to order amounts and numbers, thinking about the greatest and fewest amount or number. We have also been learning about how to use and write our own number lines, thinking about when we start counting and stop counting. We practised counting on from different numbers and stopping at a given number e.g can you count from 5 and stop at 12? The children really enjoyed making their very own number line to use.

History

All year we think about important figures from history of all coloured skins. October however is a month where as a nation we celebrate historical figures of colour who make a difference to make our lives better. This week we looked briefly and some important figures such as Nelson Mandela, Rosa Parks and Malala Yousafzai. All these individuals stood for equal rights for all and fought to make peoples lives better. We then looked in more detail at a young girl called Ruby Bridges and discussed the difficulties she faced all because she wanted to learn and go to school. We thought about how brave she was and how she made a difference for all children. We talked about how we all need to show each other respect and how skin colour shouldn't matter but the type of person we are inside.
