Year 1 - Sycamore

Welcome to Sycamore class.

 

 

 

 

 

The teaching team is Mrs Barker and Mrs Loonat in the mornings. The afternoon team is Mrs Barker, Miss Hussain, Miss Tipping and Mrs Patel.

 

 

Reading

Can you please make sure that your child brings their book bag to school everyday? Reading books will be changed usually on Fridays. Can you please put a comment in the reading diary if you have listened to your child read?

Library books will be changed on Tuesdays.

 

PE this half term will be on Mondays and Wednesdays, please make sure that your child has their PE kit on these days.

 

Homework challenges- one challenge is to be completed each week. The children can choose which one they would like to do.  Pease make sure that homework is brought back to school by Tuesday.

Spring 1 

Our topic this half term is 'Frozen Planet'.

 

 

Spring 1 Topic Summary

Our topic this half term is 'Frozen Planet'. We will be looking at stories and texts that are set in Polar Regions. We will be reading a mixture of fiction and non-fiction texts, including Disney's Frozen, 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers, and 'The Emperor's Egg'. We will be learning all about the Arctic and Antarctic and investigating the different animals that live there (including penguins and polar bears). As historians we will research people who have travelled to Antarctica and will find out what makes them significant in British History. During our topic work we will be learning about the seasonal changes that occur in winter. As part of our topic we will also be considering the impact of climate change and global warming on the people and animals that live in the Polar Regions. In science we will be exploring materials and investigating the different properties that they have. During our RE lessons we will be finding out about special books and the messages and morals that different stories can teach us (e.g. to share, to look after each other).

English- Our text this week is  ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. This week we will be focussing on speech and speech marks in our writing and planning a new story about the boy and the penguin

 

Maths - This week we are continuing to look at the different images and resources we can use for addition and subtraction. We will continue to learn about halves and quarters of a range of shapes.

 

Topic – This week in history we will be going on our very own Expedition to Antarctica just like Earnest Shackleton.

Week Commencing: Monday 5th February 2018

English- Our text this week is  ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. This week we will be focussing on speech and speech marks in our writing and planning a new story about the boy and the penguin.

 

Maths - This week we are continuing to look at the different images and resources we can use for addition and subtraction. We will continue to learn about halves and quarters of a range of shapes.

 

Topic – This week in science we will be focusing on ice experiments. We will be experimenting how ice melt in different places and why it melts.

Week Commencing: Monday 29th January 2018

 

English- Our new text this week is ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. We will be using this story to look at different ways to start a sentence, making our writing more interesting to read. We will be making lost and found posters for the penguin using descriptive language. In addition to this we will be learning how to include speech in our writing.

 

Maths - This week we are continuing to learn how to add and subtract numbers and the different words we can use for this. We will be exploring different equipment we can use to check our answers such as 10 grids, number lines and bead strings. We will be given examples where we have to find the WRONG answers and put the right!

 

Topic - In RE we will be looking in more detail at books which are special in different religions and how we have to treat them with respect. We will be learning about the importance of stories with a moral message and looking at some well known examples. In Design Technology we are designing and making items for some of the characters we have learned about so far this term.

Week beginning 22-01-18 

 

 

English

This week we will be describing the setting for the story of Frozen and planning our own story of The Little Lost Troll. We will be looking at the different sections of beginning, middle and end and using these to help us construct an exciting new story.

 

Maths

In maths this week we will continue our work on subtraction and addition to 20, looking at the different ways we can work this out and methods of recording.

 

Topic

This week we will be applying our knowledge of materials to the design of a house for Stickman. We will be looking at the important of books in different world religions and how we have to treat them with respect.

 

 Spring 1- Week 2

 

 Week Commencing: Monday 15th January 2018

 

 English - We are continuing to learn about 'Frozen'. We will be designing our character for the story. We will be working towards our writing targets by using full stops, capital letters, using 'and' ‘because’ to connect our ideas together and using adjectives to describe the characters.

 

Maths – We will continue to learn how to add and subtract numbers. We will use number lines to help us find missing numbers. We will count to 100 and back and learning to read and write 2 digit numbers.

 

Topic - In RE we will be sharing which books are special to us. In Science we will be naming and identifying different materials. In PSHE we will be finding out and discussing how we learn things.

Spring 1- Week 1

 English- Our new text this week is 'Frozen'. We will be writing about the characters and events in the story. We will be working towards our writing targets by using full stops, capital letters and 'and' to connect our ideas together.

Maths - This week we are continuing to learn how to add and subtract numbers and the different words we can use for this. We will count to 100 and back and learn to read and write 2 digit numbers.

Topic - In RE we will be sharing the books which are special to us. In Science we will be looking at 'winter' and observing the changes in our local environment. In PSHE we will be finding out and discussing how we learn things. We will be reflecting on what we have learnt so far this year.

 

Autumn 2

Our topic this half term is 'Into the Forest...'

 

We will be looking at stories that are set in forests and learning about the different types of characters that are in traditional tales and fairy tales. We will be reading lots of interesting and exciting stories, including 'The Gruffalo’s Child', 'Room on the Broom' and 'Hansel and Gretel'. During our topic work we will be learning about the environment around us and will be thinking about the seasonal changes that occur in Autumn. We will also be learning about different types of weather and will be developing our skills as weather presenters. During our history and RE lessons we will be finding out about different festivals and celebrations. We will be exploring how different events such as Bonfire Night, Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas are celebrated.

Week beginning 27th November 2017

English

This week we will be continuing our study of ‘Room on the Broom’. We will be writing instructions to make a magic potion using adjectives to make our writing more interesting to the reader.

This will help to prepare us for the work we will be doing next week on capacity.

 

Maths

In maths this week we are continuing to work on the measures of length and mass. We will be measuring length, width and circumference using non-standard and standard measures. We will be using the language of comparison such as … is longer than … but shorter than …. We will also be using non-standard measures to weight the mass of different objects.

 

Topic

This week we will continue to record the daily weather in Dewsbury. In addition to this we will look at the national forecast and record the weather in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

   We will also begin our work on materials, looking at the made objects around us to see which materials have been used.

Week beginning 20th November 2017

 

English

This week we are continuing to look at the story ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson.  We will write instruction texts for  magic spells to make a broom, focusing on the use of adjectives and conjunctions like ‘and’, ‘so’, and ‘because’.

 

Maths

This week in maths we are moving on to measuring the mass of different objects. We will use a range of standard and non standard measures to find the heaviest and lightest of a group and to order objects by mass.

 

Topic

As we are now fully in the midst of Autumn, we will start to look at weather and the seasons. We will learn to identify and name different types of weather. This week we will be completing simple weather record in preparation for a more detailed record next week using some of the measures we have been working on this half term.

Later in the week we will design a mud monster and use this as a way of learning about different materials.

Autumn 2- Week 1

Week Commencing: 30th  October 2017

 

English- This week we are reading the new story of 'The Gruffalo’s Child'! We will be acting out the story and sequencing the key events in the story. We are continuing to focus on using full stops and capital letters in our writing.

 

Maths - We will be learning how to take away or subtract two numbers. We will be using resources and number lines to help develop our calculation skills. We will also be learning how to record calculations using the symbols - and = (e.g. 5 - 2 = 3).

 

Topic - In science we are learning about Autumn and how this affects the plants and the weather. We are also learning about different festivals that can take place during autumn, such as Bonfire Night. We will be creating autumn pictures during our art lessons.

SPACE EXPLORERS

 

 

We are looking forward to having an exciting term, our topic is ‘Space Explorers’ we will be researching who was first walked on the moon, who was the first British Astronaut and first Yorkshire woman to visit space.

 

Week beginning 16th October 2017

 

English

This week we will start to read our new book ‘Beegu’ this is about a little alien that is lost on earth. We will be discussing her emotions and what we would do to try and help her. The children will make an action plan to help get her back to her parents.     

 

Maths

In mathematics we are looking at different ways of showing subtraction. We will be using cubes, number lines and number grids. Sometimes we will be counting back in our heads.

 

Topic

We will be researching the first women to go to space and work in space.

 In RE we will be finding out how Sikhs and Hindu people celebrate Diwali.  

 

Week beginning 9th  October 2017

 

English

We will be finding out about how astronauts survive in space. We have written to Andy the Astronaut and hope that he will come and visit us on Wednesday.

If he does we will be writing a recount of his visit.

Maths

In mathematics we are looking at different ways of making numbers up to 20. We will be using cubes, number lines and number grids. Sometimes we will be counting on in our heads.

Topic

We will be researching the “Race to Space” in history and learning about key factors of which country was first to arrive in space and then which country had an astronaut walk on the moon first!

In computing we will be learning about logging on and saving our work.

Week beginning 2nd October 2017

 

English

This week we will continue to base our work around the story of 'Whatever Next'. We will be describing special attributes about the main characters. Our focus in writing will be using capital letters and finger spaces.

 

Maths

In mathematics we are looking at different ways of showing addition. We will be using cubes, number lines and number grids. Sometimes we will be counting on in our heads.

Topic

We will be researching space logos for the different countries involved in trying to get to space. We will be designing our own logos.

In computing we will be learning about how to stay safe online.

 

Autumn 1- Week 3

Week Commencing: 18th September 2017

 

English- This week we will be starting to read the story 'Whatever Next!'. We will be learning to retell the story and will be sequencing the events.

 

Maths - This week we are continuing to practise reading, writing and ordering numbers to 20. We will be using our super number skills to work out 'one more' and 'one less' than numbers to 20 (or even 30!).

 

Topic - We will be starting to learn about different celebrations in R.E. In History we are going to be making a time line about Neil Armstrong's life. In computing we will be learning how to log on and off the computer safely.In Science we will be labelling different parts of the body.

Week beginning 11th  September 2017

 

English                                               

We will be watching a short animated film, based on the book ‘The Way Back Home.’ This is about a small child who meets an alien on the moon; they both have trouble with their space ships. They help each other and then become friends.

 

We will be making our own story maps, thinking about what questions they could ask each other and then then the children will pretend to be the small child and write a letter to the alien.

We will be using our phonic skills, finger spaces and full stops.

 

Maths

We will be focusing on ordering and writing numbers up to 20. We will also be designing 2D space crafts and rockets.

 

Topic

In History we will be finding out and researching interesting facts about the first man on the moon.

In DT we will be constructing model space ships and in Science we will be labelling parts of the body.
