Information about the class

Welcome to Class Matisse's web page! We are named after the well known artist Henri Matisse. We are a year one class with 22 pupils. Our teachers are Miss Akhtar , Mrs Loonat and Miss Tipping.
 

What you need to know

Reading books - Reading books are changed once a week following a guided reading session. Library books are also changed once a week. Children need their book bags and reading books in school everyday.
Homework - A homework challenge sheet will be sent every half term. The children can can choose what homework they would like to do each week and then must hand in their work the following Wednesday. Homework books will then be checked and returned every Friday. 

PE - Our P.E. lessons will take place every Tuesday and Wednesday.
Please note earrings and any other jewellery must be removed prior to the lesson for health and safety reasons.

P.E. Kit : Navy or black jogging pants; leggings, shorts, white t-shirt, black pumps or trainers

Topic for Summer 2

  ‘It's a jungle out there!'

 

 

 

The jungle can be a scary place which is what Mowgli discovered in our digital literacy topic The Jungle Book! We will be learning all about wild animals in this topic. We will also be learning about healthy eating looking carefully at fruits and vegetables. We will even get a chance to try some unusual ones!

EID MUBARAK!

We hope you have had a wonderful Eid. We will be continuing the celebrations in school on Tuesday with our own Eid fun day!!!

 

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be continuing our work on creating our very own characters. The character will be animals and we will be using our knowledge of the existing characters to think about their features.  

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on learning all about money. We will be learning to recognise coins and notes and know the value of money.
Topic -  In science this week we will be learning all about the diet of animals, such as herbivores, omnivores and carnivores.

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be researching and describing the setting of the jungle book. Therefore we will be learning all about jungles. We will be researching animals that live in the jungle and beginning to create our very own characters!

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on sharing. We will be learning to share between groups of 2, 5 and 10. We will be learning about the division sign and solving problems. 
Topic - For our computing lesson we will learn how to use an the 2code software to develop our knowledge of algorithms in programming.  In DT we will be designing our own Fruit Salads! In science this week we will be learning all about the classification of animals!

What we will be learning this week:

English- This week we will be focusing on the Jungle book. The children will be learning about India and describing the jungle. The children will also be using adjectives to describe the characters in the story. 

Maths- This week in maths we will be working on multiplication and division. We will practice our 2. 5 and 10 multiplications by revisiting and building on the work we have done previously in year 1. 

Topic - This week in science we will be learning all about the classification of animals such as mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. In Design and technology we will be continuing our work from last week by looking at healthy eating and examining fruit and vegetables. 

Summer 2 - Week 1

Week commencing 5th June 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be focusing on phonics activities. We will be playing lots of phonics related games in preparation for the screening next week. 
Maths- This week in maths we will continue to work on addition and subtraction. We will be reinforcing the learning we have done throughout the year and trying to work independently. We will also try to apply our skills to word problems. 

Topic - We are going to be learning about continents this week! We will also be looking at what we know about animals.

We will be growing healthy food to eat, thinking about how we can keep ourselves safe and healthy. We will also be continuing our exciting work with the YSP on our art project "Life Of A Bee".

Summer 1 - Week 5

Week commencing 22nd May 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be visiting Skipton Castle! In preparation for our visit we will be researching Skipton Castle and then we will write up our own non fiction texts all about Skipton Castle!
Maths- This week in maths we will continue to work on addition and subtraction. We will be reinforcing the learning we have done throughout the year and trying to work independently. 

Topic - We will continue our work on plants in science, and write up the results for the investigation. 

Summer 1 - Week 4

Week commencing 15th May 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we are going to write our instructions for the fruit kebabs we made last week. Remembering to use verbs and time connectives in our writing. We will also be looking at non-fiction texts and researching information about Skipton Castle in preparation for our trip!
Maths- This week in maths we will move on to addition and subtraction. We will begin by recapping on our number bonds to 20. 

Topic - We will continue our work on plants in science, looking at how seeds reproduce. In computing this week we will recap our work on algrithms by drawing a house. It sounds easier then it actually is!

Summer 1 - Week 3

Week commencing 8th May 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we are going to make fruit kebabs! We will then write instructions using verbs, adverbs and time connectives. 
Maths- This week in maths we will continue to focus on place value. We will compare numbers from last week. We will then find 1 more and 1 less than a given number. 
Topic - We will check on our plants from last week. In our groups we will write up the results and then feedback to the other groups about what we found out.

Week commencing 1st May 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be writing diary entries! We will be role playing the characters of Jack and the giant and writing the diaries from their perspectives. 
Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on place value. We will look at comparing numbers using the symbols <> and =. We will start by looking and objects, pictures and 10's and 1's before moving on to numbers.
Topic - We will be conducting a science experiment! We will investigating if plants can grow with water and what happens if we give one plant Iron Bru? We will write up our experiments and learn about fair testing.

Week commencing 24th April 2017

 

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be writing descriptions of characters and settings. We will pay particular attention to using a range of adjectives in our work. We are going to include a range of conjunctions in our writing. 
Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on place value. We will look at counting forwards and backwards to 100 from a given number. We will also be looking and reading and writing numbers 1- 20 in numbers and number names. 
Topic - We will be learning about the patron saint of England, St George. We will also be learning geography skills by beginning to look at the world and discuss continents. 

Spring 2 Topic Summary

Our topic this half term is 'Once Upon a Time...' We will be looking at and learning about different fairy tales. Some of the text we will be reading will include 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and 'The Princess and the Pea'. We will begin to use our story language and writing skills to create our own versions too! We will also be learning about castles and knights and researching why they were important. We will be developing our art and design skills to create our own fairy tale castles.

Spring 2 - Week 5

Week commencing 27th March 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be learning all about the lifecycle of a chick and how to look after them. We will be able to observe this first hand with the chicks that will be hatching out in school. We will also be learning to write our own adventure chick stories.
Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on positional and directional language. We will be using the bee-bots to programme instructions using directional language. We will be learning about 'turns' and will be practising making full, half and quarter turns.
Topic - Continuing on from our history focus we will move on to exploring different monarchs and talking about what makes a good King or Queen. In science we will be updating our bean diaries and making observations about what changes we can see!
 

Spring 2 - Week 4

Week commencing 20th March 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be carrying on with the story 'The princess and the Pea'. We will be learning to take on the role of another character (The prince or the princess) and will learn how to write a diary extract from a characters view point.

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on telling the time to o'clock and half past. We will also learn to describe and solve practical problems for time. We will the learn to measure and begin to record time in minutes and seconds.
Topic - We will be learning about the different parts of a castle and will be researching who lived in a castle. Duncan the musician will be coming back to work with us on Wednesday; helping us to develop a sound installation for our work on 'The life of a Bee'. In PSHE we will be learning about belonging and what it means to belong to different groups.

Spring 2 - Week 2

Week commencing 6th March 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be learning about the life and job of a bee. We will also be researching the life cycle of a bee and will be compiling this into an information (non- fiction text) book about bees.

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on fractions. We will be learning how to identify half and a quarter of an amount. E.g. ½ of 12 = 6 and ¼  of 12 = 3
Topic - In Science we will continue our work on the four seasons with a greater focus on spring. In Geography we will be looking at maps of Dewsbury and how they are laid out. We will then focus on the school area and will learn to draw a map of school using a simple map key.

In PSHE we will be learning all about perseverance and working together as a team!

 

Spring 2 - Week 1

Week commencing 27th February 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be learning to write our own cookie recipes. We will be learning to use bossy verbs and time connectives (First, next, then, after that) in our writing.

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on measuring weight in grams and kilograms.
Topic - On Wednesday we will be making jam thumb print biscuits for the 'Year one Enterprise.'  We will be selling these on Thursday for 20p. Please help us by buying one or even two! smiley We will be using the money collected to buy fantasy characters and puppets for our small world /story area.
On Thursday we will be celebrating World book day by wearing our pyjamas to school and sharing our favourite bedtime stories.

In Science we will be learning about the four seasons. We will focus on the differences between each season.

Spring 1 Topic Summary

Our topic this half term is 'Frozen Planet'. We will be looking at stories and texts that are set in polar regions. We will be reading a mixture of fiction and non-fiction texts, including Disney's Frozen, 'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers, and 'Pingu'. We will be learning all about the Arctic and Antarctic and investigating the different animals that live there (including penguins and polar bears). We will also be learning to create our own stories using modelling dough and stop motion animation. 
As historians we will research people who have travelled to Antarctica and will find out what makes them significant in British History. During our topic work we will be learning about the seasonal changes that occur in winter. As part of our topic we will also be considering the impact of climate change and global warming on the people and animals who live in the polar regions. In science we will be exploring materials and investigating the different properties that they have. During our RE lessons we will be finding out about special books and the messages and morals that different stories can teach us (e.g. to share, to look after each other).

 

*This term our P.E. lesson will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Spring 1 - Week 7

Week commencing 13th February 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be planning and writing our own version of 'Lost and Found'. We will be using the story maps we created last week to help us change parts of the story.

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on multiplication. We will be learning to count in multiples of twos, fives and tens.
Topic - In RE we will be learning about how different religious books are treated in a special way.
In Geography we will be investigating where penguins come from; 
how they live and adapt to their environment. We will be writing our own books about penguins.

For our ICT lesson we will learn how to use an Ipad to create a one stop animation story using our plaster scene characters and settings created in our Art and DT lessons.

Spring 1 - Week 6

Week commencing 6th February 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be reading a new story 'Lost and Found'. We will be creating story maps and a wanted poster for the lost penguin.

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on division. We will be learning to divide a number equally between 2 or more groups. We will also begin to read and write number sentences using ÷ and =. For example 12 ÷ 2 = 6
Topic - This week we will be taking part in the 'Internet Safety Week' with the rest of the school. As part of this we will be learning how to keep ourselves safe on the internet and learning how to use other electronic devices safely.
In Geography and Science we will continue to work on our weather charts and will learn a bit more about the Inuit people and their way of life.
For our ICT lesson we will begin to learn how to use an Ipad to create a one stop animation story using our plaster scene characters and settings created in our Art and DT lessons.

Spring 1 - Week 5

Week commencing 30th January 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week is 'National Story Telling' week. We will be learning to plan and write our own stories using ideas from other stories. Our stories will be set in the North and South pole continuing on from our topic work based on the frozen planet. We will make up a new character and learn to use adjectives to bring our stories to life.

Maths- This week we will be focusing on length and weight. We will be learning to use a ruler to measure in centimetres and metres and will also begin to compare and measure weight using standard and non standard measure.
Topic - In RE we will talk about books from other faith and share our ideas on how to look after them.
In Geography and Science we will be starting a weather chart to explore changes over time. We will also be looking at how animals and the Inuit people adapt to the winter weather.
For our PE lessons we will continue to practice our balancing and tight rope walking skills.

Spring 1 - Week 4

Week commencing 23rd January 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be watching two episodes of 'Pingu' before learning to predict what the characters might be saying. We will begin to explore body language and facial expressions to help us decide how the characters are feeling and what they may be saying. We will also be learning to write in speech bubbles.

Maths- This week we will be focusing on addition and subtraction. We will be learning to solve missing number sentences
e.g. 7 + ? = 9. and will also learn to use a number line to support our learning.

Topic - In DT we will be working in pairs to design and build a polar setting. This will be in preparation to support our 'Stop motion animation' stories to come in the following weeks.

In RE we will be learning all about the 'Chinese New Year' and how it is celebrated. We will also have the chance to take part in some of these activities during our Chinese activity morning on Friday.

Spring 1 - Week 3

Week commencing 16th January 2017

What we are learning this week:

English-  We are reading the non-fiction book 'Animals in cold countries'. We will be learning about the Arctic and Antarctic. Which animals live there and how they adapt to their environment. We will be writing our own fact books about animals that live in these places.

Maths- This week we will continue to learn about place value. We will learn to partition 2-digit numbers in to tens and ones. E.g. 42 has 4 tens and 2 ones.
Topic - In RE we will be sharing our ideas on how to look after books. In PSHE we will be considering how to become more independent learners. In Geography and Science we will be considering how animals adapt to the winter weather. For our PE lessons we will be creating arctic animals movements and sequencing them together.

Spring 1 - Week 1 

Week commencing 2nd January 2017

What we are learning this week:

English-  Our new text this week is 'Frozen'. We will be writing about the characters and events in the story. We will be working towards our writing targets by using full stops, capital letters and 'and' to connect our ideas together.

Maths- This week we will be learning to recognise and use language relating to dates including days of the week, weeks, months and years.
Topic In RE we will be sharing which books are special to us. In Science we will be looking and 'winter' and observing the changes in our local environment. In PSHE we will be finding out and discussing how we learn things. We will be reflecting on what we have learnt so far this year.

Autumn 2 Topic Summary

Our topic this half term is 'Into the Forest...'. We will be looking at stories that are set in the forest and learning about the different types of characters that are in traditional tales and fairy tales. We will be reading lots of interesting and exciting stories, including 'Room on the Broom' and 'Hansel and Gretel'. During our topic work we will be learning about the environment around us and will be thinking about the seasonal changes that occur in Autumn. We will also be learning about different types of weather and will be developing our skills as weather presenters. During our history and RE lessons we will be finding out about different festivals and celebrations. We will be exploring how different events such as Bonfire Night, Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas are celebrated.

Week commencing 12th December 2016

What we are learning this week:

English- We will be learning to write invitations to invite people to our school winter wonderland tea party.

Maths- This week we will be revising a lot of the skills we have learnt this half term and applying these to different mathematical problems.

Topic In RE we will continue to explore and discuss what Christmas is. We will also be taking part in different creative tasks linked to Christmas e.g. cards.

Autumn 2 - Week 6

Week commencing 5th December 2016

What we are learning this week:

English- We are starting to read an exciting story called The Polar Express. We will be retelling the story and trying very hard to use adjectives. We will be talking about how the different characters might have felt at different times in the story. We will be doing a persuasive piece of writing about why we should go on the Polar Express

Maths- This week we are learning about time and talking about different times in the day, leading to telling the time e.g. – 9 o'clock

Topic - In Science we will be looking at and naming the different properties of materials. In RE we will be listening to the Christmas Story and finding out about how Christians celebrate Christmas.

 

We are going to watch the children at Savile Town in their special performance of the Nativity.

 

Autumn 2 - Week 5

Week commencing 28th November 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  We will continue looking at the story 'Hansel and Gretel'. We will be learning to use adjectives (describing words) to describe the characters in the story. we will compare good and bad characters from stories and will talk about the feeling of the main characters and how they change through the story. 

Maths- This week we are learning to recognise coins and notes (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p ... ). We will learn to match them to their correct value using Numicon.

Topic -  In Science we will be learning to name and recognise different types of materials e.g. glass, wood, rubber etc. We will also be learning the difference between natural and man made materials. In art we will continue to investigate colour mixing using the primary colours (red, yellow and blue). In geography we will be extending our learning on the 4 countries.

Autumn 2 - Week 4

Week commencing 21st November 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  We will be reading the new text 'Hansel and Gretel'. We will be learning about the events and characters in the story. Our main focus this week is on using adjectives (describing words) to describe the people and places in the story.

Maths- This week we are learning how to find half and quarters of different objects and shapes.

Topic -  In RE we are considering the ways that celebrations can be similar or different to each other. In art we are learning about colour mixing; we will be investigating how to make different colours using the primary colours (red, yellow and blue). In geography we will be learning to use google maps, traditional maps and the globe to locate and learn about 4 new countries.

Autumn 2 - Week 3

Week commencing 14th November 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will be looking at rhyming words. We will be identifying words that rhyme and will then begin to write a poem. We will also continue to focus on using full stops and capital letters in our writing.

Maths- This week we will be learning to measure weight and capacity in standard and non standard measures.

Topic - This week in geography we will be learning to use google maps, traditional maps and the globe to locate and learn about 4 new countries.

Autumn 2 - Week 2

Week commencing 7th November 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will be reading the story 'The Room on the broom.' We will be acting out the story and sequencing the key events in the story by making a story map. We are continuing to focus on using full stops and capital letters in our writing.

Maths- This week we will be learning to measure length and weight in standard and non standard measures.

Topic - This week we will be taking part in the 'Kirklees learning week' by making our own sculptures in our outdoor sculptural space. In history we will be learning all about 'Remembrance Day.'

Autumn 2 - Week 1

Week commencing 31st October 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will be exploring the senses work stations (taste, smell, sight, touch and hearing). We will work in groups to carry out a number of experiments which we will follow up with a report to show our findings. We will focus on using the correct vocabulary to talk about and describe each of the five senses. For example Taste: sour, sweet, bitter, salty, hot ...

Maths- This week we will be learning to name and order the days of the week. We will also be ordering the events that can happen in a day.

Topic - We are learning about Autumn and how this affects the plants and the weather. We are also learning about different festivals that can take place during autumn, such as Bonfire Night. We will be creating autumn pictures during our art lessons.

Autumn 1 - Week 7

Week commencing 17th October 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we are learning about the planets and stars in the solar system. We will be watching a short science video about planets to help us with our non-fiction fact writing about planets.

Maths- This week we will continue to focus on addition and subtraction calculations. We will also be reviewing our learning over the past few weeks. This includes number bonds, counting in 2's, 5's and 10's, Ordering numbers up to 50, practising the correct number formation and addition and subtraction.

Topic - We will be using our imagination to create a rocket or new form of transport to travel into space. We will be using recycled materials to create our space crafts. We will also be painting our own space scenes using poster paints and cling film to create a desired effect. Don't forget to keep a look out for our work later on in the week!

Harvest Festival food collection

We are collecting tinned and dried foods to help support our local community. All food collected will be donated to the Food Bank in Dewsbury and use to support families in need.

Suitable types of food include: 
dried pasta, rice, tins of beans, tinned vegetables, tinned fruit, biscuits, flour, tea, coffee, sugar

Food will be collected in a basket by the school office.

Autumn 1 - Week 6
Week commencing 10th October 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we are learning about astronauts! We will have a special visitor in school - Andy the astronaut! We will begin the week by thinking of some questions we would like to ask Andy then put this into practice when we see him on Wednesday. We will also be writing a thank you letter to Andy and will be learning the key features that we need to include in a letter.

Maths- This week we are focussing on addition and subtraction calculations. We will be learning how to work out the answer to addition and subtraction problems using resources and a number line. We will be practising recording our answers using + , - and = correctly.
Topic - In science we will be taking part in a 'senses' afternoon, where we will be investigating how we use each of our senses. In history we will be writing about Neil Armstrong and completing our work on astronauts.  

Autumn 1 - Week 5
Week commencing 3rd October 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will be writing our own set of instructions on how to make a jam sandwich using bossy verbs (Imperative verbs). We will use the skills we have learnt over the pass week to write a set of instructions independently.

Later on in the week we will be starting a new story 'The way back home'. We will be learning to retell the story and will begin to learn about speech and speech bubbles. 

Maths- This week we will be learning to take away one group of objects from another. We will begin to read and write simple subtraction number sentences using - and =
Topic - In science we will continue to learn about the five human senses: sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste. We will be focusing on touch and sight. In our RE lessons we will continue to explore why we celebrate different events and will consider the different Islamic celebrations that take place. In our DT lessons we will continue to design and make our own rockets.

Week commencing 26th September 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will begin by writing a list of things to take to the moon for a picnic. We will then help Baby Bear to make a jam sandwich by learning to use bossy verbs to give instructions orally before learning to write a set of instructions on how to make a jam sandwich.

Maths- This week we will begin to name and talk about the properties of 3D shapes. We will also continue to practice forming our numbers correctly.
Topic - In science we will be learning about the five human senses: sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste. We will begin by focusing on smell and taste. In our RE lessons we will continue to explore why we celebrate different events and will consider the different Islamic celebrations that take place. In our DT lessons we will be designing and making our own rockets. We will be learning to use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks. E.g. cutting, shaping, joining and finishing

Week commencing 19th September 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will continue to read and focus on the story 'Whatever Next'. We will be learning to write short sentences to retell parts of the story. We will be developing our writing skills by learning to organise the words in a sentence correctly; making sure it makes sense by reading it aloud.

Maths- This week we will using our number skills to explore making numbers up to 10 (number bonds). We will be learning about addition and how to use different resources to help us find the answer to our calculations. We will also learn to recognise and use the + and = symbols to support our learning about addition.
Topic - In science we will be learning to name the different parts of the body. We will also begin to discuss the purpose of different body parts. In our RE lessons we will be thinking about why we celebrate different events and will start to consider the different Islamic celebrations that take place. In our art work we will be discussing the work of Henri Matisse and making our own work of art in a similar style.

Week commencing 12th September 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will begin to read the story 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy. We will talk about the basic features of a story and will practice retelling the story. We will also be learning to sequence the main events of the story.

Maths- We will be learning to read, write and order numbers correctly in a hundred square. We will also be using our number skills to identify one more and one less of a number up to 30.
Topic - We will continue to learn about different celebrations in R.E. and compare them with our own. In computing we will discuss the rules about using technology and the internet in school and at home. We will also learn about the importance of keeping ourselves and others safe.
