Class Information

Hello and Welcome to Hepworh Class! We are named after a famous Yorkshire artist, Barbara Hepworth, who was born in Wakefield. She went to Leeds University to study art. She became well know for her Bronze and Wood sculptures, which can be seen at the Barbara Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

 

The teaching team are:- Mrs P Barker,  Mrs B Asmal and Miss T Hussain.  We are happy to meet and talk in the morning from 8:50 am and after 3:00 pm in the afternoon.

 

Important Information

Reading

 

A reading book will be sent home on Friday, please try and read with your child every day. A library book will be sent home on Mondays.Please make sure that book bags are brought to school everyday.

PE

 

PE is on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please make sure that PE clothes are in school on these days. Can you please make sure that earrings are removed for health and safety reasons.

 

Homework Challenge

A homework challenge will be sent home every Friday where you can choose what homework you would like to do over the weekend(this can be found in the inside cover of the home book). Our topic book this half term is the Jungle Book! We will be learning about wild animals and their classifications. We will be learning about healthy eating and researching different fruit and vegetables. 

 

Summer 2- Week 3

Week Commencing: 19th June 2017

 

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will describing researching and describing the setting of the jungle book. We will be finding out about what it feels like to live in a jungle. We will be researching animals that live in the jungle and we will create a new character for Jungle Book!

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on sharing. We will be learning to share between groups of 2, 5 and 10. We will be learning about the division sign and solving problems. 
Topic - For our computing lesson we will learn how to use an the 2code software to develop our knowledge of algorithms in programming.  In DT we will be designing our own Fruit Salad. In science this week we will be learning all about the classification of animals!

What we will be learning this week:

English- This week we will be focusing on the Jungle book. The children will be learning about India and describing the jungle. The children will also be using adjectives to describe the characters in the story. 

Maths- This week in maths we will be working on multiplication and division. We will practice our 2. 5 and 10 multiplications by revisiting and building on the work we have done previously in year 1. 

Topic - This week in science we will be learning all about the classification of animals such as mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. In Design and technology we will be continuing our work from last week by looking at healthy eating and examining fruit and vegetables. 

 

We will be thinking about Jo Cox and having 'The Great Get Together' as a school community, we will be making 'Funny Face Fruit Salads'.

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be focusing on phonics activities. We will be playing lots of phonics related games. We will be sharing our holiday news and writing reports about our holidays.
Maths- This week in maths we will continue to work on addition and subtraction. We will be reinforcing the learning we have done throughout the year and trying to work independently. We will also try to apply our skills to word problems. 

Topic - We are going to be learning about continents this week! We will also be looking at what we know about animals.

We will be growing healthy food to eat, thinking about how we can keep ourselves safe and healthy. We will also be continuing our exciting work with the YSP on our art project "Life Of A Bee"

Week commencing 15th May 2017

 

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be writing our instructions for the fruit kebabs we made last week. We will be using time connectives and verbs. We will also be looking at non-fiction texts and researching information about Skipton Castle in preparation for our trip next week!
Maths- This week in maths we will move on to addition and subtraction. We will begin by recapping on our number bonds to 20. 

Topic - We will continue our work on plants in science, looking at how seeds reproduce. In computing this week we will recap our work on algrithms by drawing a house. We will be taking part in a 'Mini Mission', lots of different PE games and activities at Thornhill Lees School with our friends from Savile Town. We all need to bring our PE kits on Monday.

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we are going to make delicious and healthy fruit kebabs We will then write instructions using verbs, adverbs and time connectives. 
Maths- This week in maths we will continue to focus on place value. With a particular focus on 1 more and 1 less than a given number up to 100. 
Topic - We will check on our plants from last week. In our groups we will write up the results and then feedback to the other groups about what we found out. We will be taking part in four different workshops with all of Key stage 1, working with our friends from the Prevent team, thinking about how we can respect one another. Duncan from YSP will be working with us on our exciting sound installation for YSP

What we are learning this week:

English-  We will be pretending to be Jack or the Giant and we will be writing our diary over the week. We will try really hard to empathise with the characters
Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on place value. We will look at comparing numbers using the symbols <> and =. We will start by looking and objects, pictures and 10's and 1's before moving on to numbers.
Topic - We will be conducting a science experiment. We will investigating, to see if plants can grow with or without water and what happens if we give one plant Iron Bru? We will write up our experiments and learn about fair testing.

Week commencing 24th April 2017

 

What we are learning this week:

English- We will be continuing some of our work on "Life of a Bee", writing about the day in a life of a honey bee. We will using our descriptive skills using adjectives and connectives.
Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on number and place value, focusing on counting upto 100 forwards and backwards from any given number. We will also be identifying one more or one less than a given number. 
Topic - Duncan the sound artist  will be working with us on our sound installation for the YSP. We will continue our research on honey bees and we will also be finding out about Saint George and how he became the patron saint for England.

Once upon a time...

 

Our topic this half term is 'Once Upon a Time...' We will be reading different fairy tales. Some of these Fairy Tales will be 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and 'The Princess and the Pea'. We will begin to use our story language and writing skills to create our own versions too! We will also be learning about castles and knights and researching why they were important. We will be developing our art and design skills to create our own fairy tale castles.

 

Spring 2 - Week 5

Week commencing 27th March 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be learning all about the lifecycle of a chick and how to look after them. We will be able to observe this first hand with the chicks that will be hatching out in school. We will also be learning to write our own adventure chick stories.
Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on positional and directional language. We will be using the bee-bots to programme instructions using directional language. We will be learning about 'turns' and will be practising making full, half and quarter turns.
Topic - Continuing on from our history focus we will move on to exploring different monarchs and talking about what makes a good King or Queen. In science we will be updating our bean diaries and making observations about what changes we can see!

 

Week 3 commencing 20th March 2017

 

English- We are continuing our work regarding Princess and the Pea, we will be retelling the story in chronological order. We will then begin reading a non-fiction book so that we can research and write about castles

Maths-We will be revisiting time; learning to recognise when it is half past the hour. We will also estimate how long it will take to carry out some activities- how many bricks we will use in 60 seconds (1 minute) how many jumps we can do in 1 minute and the children will think of challenges for their friends.

Topic- We will be researching who lived in castles. The musician Duncan will be coming back to work with us; helping us to develop a sound installation for our work on- 'The life of a Bee'. In Science we will be researching what sight is like for a bee, what are the best flowers for bees to pollinate.

 

Week 3 commencing 13th March 2017

What are we learning this week:

English- We are going to be reading an alternative version of Princess and the Pea will be thinking and writing suitable adjectives to describe the main characters. We will be imagining that we are the prince or the princess and asking each other questions.

Maths-We are revisiting number bonds up to 10 and then 20.

Topic- We will be researching the different parts of a castle. We have a musician coming into class to work with us; we will be working on making different bee sounds, to further enhance our work on 'The life of a Bee'. In PSHCE we will think about- ‘why it is good to be me’! We will be thinking about all the good things we have achieved. In RE we are talking and writing about what it means to belong to a Mosque.

Week 2  commencing 6th March 2017

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be finishing off our work on our enterprise project and then learning about the life and job of a bee. We will also be researching the life cycle of a bee and will be compiling this into an information (non- fiction text) book about bees.

Maths- This week in maths we will be focusing on fractions. We will be learning how to identify half and a quarter of an amount. E.g. ½ of 12 = 6 and ¼  of 12 = 3
Topic - In Science we will continue our work on the four seasons with a greater focus on spring with a Spring walk.

In Geography we will be looking at maps of Dewsbury and looking to see where we live. We will then focus on the school area and will learn to draw a map of school using a simple map key.

In PSHE we will be learning all about perseverance and working together as a team!

Week beginning 27th February 2017

Hello and welcome back! In English we will be focusing on writing instructions for how to make cookies. We will be using time connectives. We will be making these to sell on World Book Day!

In maths we will be measuring using standard and non standard measures relating to weight. We will be weighing and measuring ingredients to make pancakes and cookies

In Geography we will be going on a nature walk looking for signs of spring.

Spring 1 Topic Summary

Our topic this half term is 'Frozen Planet'. We will be looking at stories and texts that are set in polar regions. We will be reading a mixture of fiction and non-fiction texts, including Disney's Frozen'Lost and Found' by Oliver Jeffers, and 'Pingu'. We will be learning all about the Arctic and Antarctic and investigating the different animals that live there (including penguins and polar bears). We will also be learning to create our own stories using modelling dough and stop motion animation. 
As historians we will research people who have travelled to Antarctica and will find out what makes them significant in British History. During our topic work we will be learning about the seasonal changes that occur in winter. As part of our topic we will also be considering the impact of climate change and global warming on the people and animals who live in the polar regions. In science we will be exploring materials and investigating the different properties that they have. During our RE lessons we will be finding out about special books and the messages and morals that different stories can teach us (e.g. to share, to look after each other).

 

*This term our P.E. lesson will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Week commencing 13th February 2017

 

English- This week we will be talking about our own favourite stories. We will be using ideas from the stories we like to create our own stories. We will use our imagination and make sure we use adjectives, connectives, capital letters and full stops to create our own stories.  

Maths- This week we will be focusing on multiplication. We will be learning and practicing counting up in twos, fives and tens.
Topic – In Science we be making predictions and experimenting using objects made of different materials to see if they float or sink.  
For our PE lessons we will continue to practice our balancing and tight rope walking skills.

In RE we will talk about books from other faith and share our ideas on how to look after them, this week we will be focusing on Christianity and the Bible.

 

Spring 1 - Week 6

Week commencing 6th February 2017

 

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be authors and we will be writing our own stories. We will use our story plans from last week to write our own stories. We will be taking great care to make sure we include adjectives in our work. We will also be making stop animations using our characters and our settings which we will make in Art. We are going to use modelling clay to make our character from our stories in Art.

Maths- This week we will be focusing on division. We will be learning to half and share. We will be practically solving division word problems by using objects.
Topic – This week is Online Safety week, we will be learning about being safe on the internet. We will think about what is safe to share online and what is not safe to share.
In Science we will be looking at different materials and their properties. We will be doing an experiment to see which material is the best to make boat.
We will focus on making predictions.
For our PE lessons we will continue to practice our balancing and tight rope walking skills.

In ICT we will use the IPads to make stop animations.

Week commencing 30th January 2017

 

What we are learning this week:

English- This week we will be learning to plan and write our own stories. Our stories will be set in the North and South pole continuing on from our topic work based on the frozen planet. We will make up a new character and learn to use adjectives to describe our characters. We will also be writing character profiles about our characters, we will then use these characters to plan our stories. 

Maths- This week we will be focusing on length and weight. We will be learning to use a ruler to measure in centimetres and metres and will also begin to compare and measure length using standard and non standard measure. 
Topic - In RE we will talk about books from other faith and share our ideas on how to look after them.
In History we will be doing role play about Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to the South Pole. We will be going outside into our sculpture park and building our own life boats. We will be using measuring tapes to make sure our life boats are long enough to fit our whole crew. After that we will be going into our forest school and we will build shelters. This week is 'National Story Telling week' so we will be writing and sharing our own stories about our expedition to the South pole. We will think about how to make sure our shelters keep us warm, dry and safe. In PSHE we will be thinking about kind actions and about how we can be kind to others in our school. 
For our PE lessons we will continue to practice our balancing and tight rope walking skills.

Week commencing 16th January 2017

What we are learning this week:

English-  We are reading the non-fiction book 'Animals in cold countries'. We will be learning about the Arctic and Antarctic. Which animals live there and how they adapt to their environment. We will be writing our own fact books about animals that live in these places.

Maths- This week we will continue to learn about place value. We will learn to partition 2-digit numbers in to tens and ones. E.g. 42 has 4 tens and 2 ones.
Topic - In RE we will be sharing our ideas on how to look after books. In PSHE we will be considering how to become more independent learners. In Geography and Science we will be considering how animals adapt to the winter weather. For our PE lessons we will be creating arctic animals movements and sequencing them together.

What we are learning this week:

English-  Our new text this week is 'Frozen'. We will be writing about the characters and events in the story. We will be working towards our writing targets by using full stops, capital letters and 'and' to connect our ideas together.

Maths- This week we will be learning to recognise and use language relating to dates including days of the week, weeks, months and years. 
Topic - In RE we will be sharing which books are special to us. In Science we will be looking and 'winter' and observing the changes in our local environment. In PSHE we will be finding out and discussing how we learn things. We will be reflecting on what we have learnt so far this year.

 

Autumn 2 Topic Summary

Our topic this half term is 'Into the Forest...'. We will be looking at stories that are set in the forest and learning about the different types of characters that are in traditional tales and fairy tales. We will be reading lots of interesting and exciting stories, including 'Room on the Broom' and 'Hansel and Gretel'. During our topic work we will be learning about the environment around us and will be thinking about the seasonal changes that occur in Autumn. We will also be learning about different types of weather and will be developing our skills as weather presenters. During our history and RE lessons we will be finding out about different festivals and celebrations. We will be exploring how different events such as Bonfire Night, Diwali, Hanukkah and Christmas are celebrated.

What we are learning this week:

English- We will be learning to write invitations to invite people to our school winter wonderland tea party.

Maths- This week we will be revising a lot of the skills we have learnt this half term and applying these to different mathematical problems.

Topic In RE we will continue to explore and discuss what Christmas is. We will also be taking part in different creative tasks linked to Christmas e.g. cards.

Week commencing 5th December 2016

What we are learning this week:

 

English- We are starting to read an exciting story called The Polar Express. We will be retelling the story and trying very hard to use adjectives. We will be talking about how the different characters might have felt at different times in the story. We will be doing a persuasive piece of writing about why we should go on the Polar Express

 

Maths- This week we are learning about time and talking about different times in the day, leading to telling the time e.g. – 9:00

 

Topic in Science we will look at and be naming the different properties of materials. In RE we will be listening to the Christmas Story and finding out about how Christians celebrate Christmas.

 

We are going to watch the children at Savile Town in their special performance of the Nativity.

 

 

Autumn 2 - Week 5

Week commencing 28th November 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  We will continue looking at the story 'Hansel and Gretel'. We will be learning to use adjectives (describing words) to describe the characters in the story. we will compare good and bad characters from stories and will talk about the feeling of the main characters and how they change through the story. 

Maths- This week we are learning to recognise coins and notes (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p ... ). We will learn to match them to their correct value using Numicon.

Topic -  In Science we will be learning to name and recognise different types of materials e.g. glass, wood, rubber etc. We will also be learning the difference between natural and man made materials. In art we will continue to investigate colour mixing using the primary colours (red, yellow and blue). In geography we will be extending our learning on the 4 countries.

Week commencing 21st November 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  We will be reading the new text 'Hansel and Gretel'. We will be learning about the events and characters in the story. Our main focus this week is on using adjectives (describing words) to describe the people and places in the story.

Maths- This week we are learning how to find half and quarters of different objects and shapes.

Topic  In RE we are considering the ways that celebrations can be similar or different to each other. In art we are learning about colour mixing; we will be investigating how to make different colours using the primary colours (red, yellow and blue). In geography we will be learning to use google maps, traditional maps and the globe to locate and learn about 4 new countries.

Week commencing 14th November 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will be looking at rhyming words. We will be identifying words that rhyme and will then begin to write a poem. We will also continue to focus on using full stops and capital letters in our writing.

Maths- This week we will be learning to measure weight and capacity in standard and non standard measures.

Topic - This week in geography we will be learning to use google maps, traditional maps and the globe to locate and learn about 4 new countries.

English

This week in English we will be reading the exciting book- Room on a broom- we will be predicting what might happen. We we also be designing our own mode of transport using our 'sculpture shed' We will be focusing on our punctuation in writing and are starting to add adjectives to our writing, to make it more interesting.

 

Mathematics

In mathematics we will continue to focus on measuring length accurately using a ruler and non standard measures. 

Topic

This week we will be starting our work on materials by studying and describing the materials that we might use to make a mode of transport. We will be giving reasons as to why we have chosen a certain material.

 

Special events

On Tuesday we will be meeting Trish Cooke, a famous children's author, to learn all about how she gets her ideas for stories and asking her how we can make our own stories even better.

 

 

Autumn 2 - Week 1

Week commencing 31st October 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week we will be exploring the senses work stations (taste, smell, sight, touch and hearing). We will work in groups to carry out a number of experiments which we will follow up with a report to show our findings. We will focus on using the correct vocabulary to talk about and describe each of the five senses. For example Taste: sour, sweet, bitter, salty, hot ...

Maths- This week we will be learning to name and order the days of the week. We will also be ordering the events that can happen in a day.

Topic - We are learning about Autumn and how this affects the plants and the weather. We are also learning about different festivals that can take place during autumn, such as Diwali and Bonfire Night. We will be creating autumn and Diwali pictures during our art lessons.

Harvest Festival food collection

We are collecting tinned and dried foods to help support our local community. All food collected will be donated to the Food Bank in Dewsbury and use to support families in need.

Autumn 1 - Week 6
Week commencing 10th October 2016

 

English-  This week we are learning about astronauts! We will have a special visitor in school - Andy the astronaut! We will begin the week by thinking of some questions we would like to ask Andy then put this into practice when we see him on Wednesday. We will also be writing a thank you letter to Andy and will be learning the key features that we need to include in a letter.

Maths- This week we are focussing on addition and subtraction calculations. We will be learning how to work out the answer to addition and subtraction problems using resources and a number line. We will be practising recording our answers using + , - and = correctly.
Topic - In science we will be taking part in a 'senses' afternoon, where we will be investigating how we use each of our senses. In history we will be writing about Neil Armstrong and completing our work on astronauts.  

Autumn 1 - Week 5
Week commencing 3rd October 2016

 

English-  This week we will be writing our own set of instructions on how to make a jam sandwich using bossy verbs (Imperative verbs). We will use the skills we have learnt over the pass week to write a set of instructions independently.

Later on in the week we will be starting a new story 'The way back home'. We will be learning to retell the story and will begin to learn about speech and speech bubbles. 
 

Maths- This week we will be learning to take away one group of objects from another. We will begin to read and write simple subtraction number sentences using - and =

Topic - In science we will continue to learn about the five human senses: sight, touch, hearing, smell and taste. We will be focusing on touch and sight. English-  This week we will begin by writing a list of things to take to the moon for a picnic. We will then help Baby Bear to make a jam sandwich by learning to use bossy verbs to give instructions orally before learning to write a set of instructions on how to make a jam sandwich.

English- This week we will be starting to read the story 'Whatever Next!'. We will be learning to retell the story and will be sequencing the events.

 

Maths - This week we are continuing to practise reading, writing and ordering numbers to 20. We will be using our super number skills to work out 'one more' and 'one less' than numbers to 20 (or even 30!).

 

Topic - We will be starting to learn about different celebrations in R.E. In art we will be learning about the famous sculptor our class is named after (Hepworth). In computing we will be learning how to log on and off the computer safely.   

 

Other Events - Eid Extravaganza-on Tuesday 13th September- we will be celebrating Eid, finding out about Haj and why this Eid is so important- we will also be celebrating by having a party in the afternoon.
