Information about the class

Welcome to Class Warhol's web page! We are a reception class with 20 pupils. Our teachers are Mrs Denney and Mrs Bibi.

 

 

What you need to know

Reading books - Reading books are changed once a week. Children need their book bags and reading books in school everyday.
Homework - Home work will be handed out every Friday. Please ensure your child has completed and handed in their homework to their class teacher by the following Monday.

PE - * Summer 1 - Please note our P.E. lessons now take place every Wednesday.
Please note earrings and any other jewellery must be removed prior to the lesson. If you have any more questions please ask a member of staff.

P.E. Kit : Navy or black jogging pants; leggings, shorts, white t-shirt, black pumps or trainers.

What we are Learning:
 

Week commencing 6th June 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This term our topic is all about under the sea. We will begin the week by sharing what we did in our holiday using the correct tenses. E.g. I went... I saw... We will learn to change words from present to past and vice versa. We will then write a recount of our holiday. At the end of the week we will work together to decide what we would like to know about under the sea. 

 

Maths- In maths we will learn to order numbers 1 to 50/100 and will practice counting one more or less than a given number.

 

Understanding the world- We will learn about different types of plants and how to care for them. We will then have a go at planting and looking after some of these plants in our fruit and vegetable patch.
 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development- We will  begin to discuss some ways to manage our feelings and how we can use them to maintain control.



Week commencing  23rd May 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week in English we will be reading the story 'Giraffes can't dance'. We will be identifying rhyming words and will learn to make our own rhyming pairs. We will also be finding out some facts about giraffes and will compile this into a non-fiction booklet.

 

Maths- In maths we will learn to count objects in groups of the same size. We will do this by counting in 2's, 5's and 10's.

 

Science- We will learn about giraffes and their habitat.
 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development- We will focus on following our new carpet rules and will learn to remind each other about the importance of taking turns and listening to each other.

 

 

Week commencing  9th May 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week in English we will be writing a recount of our trip to the Cannon Hall Farm. We will be developing our writing skills by using time words and some descriptive language. We will continue to practice using our phonic knowledge to segment and write words. We will also focus on going back and reading our work to make sure it makes sense.

 

Maths- In maths we will be recapping our number skills and learning to recognise, name and identify the properties of 3D shapes. E.g. A cuboid has 12 edges, 8 corners and has 6 square faces,

 

Science- We will continue to learn more about plants  through our flower and coloured ink experiment. In this experiment we are trying to find out if and how plants can survive without roots. Keep a look out for the  whiteflowers in our class and see if you notice any changes over the next few days.
 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development- We will focus on learning about how our behaviour affects other including animals.
 

Week commencing  18th April 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week in English we will continue to work on the story 'The ugly Duckling'. We will be learning to retell and act out the story using our bodies. We will also be sequencing the story and making our own story maps.

 

Maths- In maths we will be learning to share numbers up to 20 using objects.

 

Science- We will continue to learn more about animals and their babies e.g. cow - calf, sheep - lamb. We will also be looking at different types of birds and talking about their similarities and differences.
 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development- We will focus on how the behaviour of others towards us can affect our emotions and feelings.

 

Week commencing  11th April 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week in English we will practice our speech, and language and skills by talking about our holidays in the past tense. This will help us to form our sentence in the correct tense when writing write about our holiday. Later on in the week we will be reading a traditional tale 'The ugly Duckling'. We will begin by talking about the book e.g. author, illustrator, blurb, title etc. before reading the story and talking about the characters feelings e.g. unhappy. frightened, lonely and what led him to feel that way.

 

Maths- In maths we will be learning to double numbers up to 10 using objects e.g. double 1 is 2, double 4 is 8

 

Science- We will begin to learn about animals and their babies e.g. duck - duckling, chicken - chick
 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development- We will be focusing on emotions and feelings and when we might feel them. e.g. lonely, sad, frightened, unhappy.

 

 

Spring 2 'The elves and the shoemaker'

Week commencing  14th March 2016

What we are learning this week:

English-  This week in English we will be learning to use descriptive words to describe the elves . We will  also be practising our drama skills by taking on the role of a character from the story 'The elves and the shoemaker.'

 

Phonics -  In phonics we will continue to  review our phase 2 sounds and will begin to learn and apply phase 3 sounds. we will continue to practise our segmenting and blending skills to help us read and write CVC and CVCC words.

 

Maths- In maths we will be learning to use everyday language related to money. e.g. penny, pence, change, cost, pound, note, how much?...

 

Science- We will learn about the names and properties of different materials and some of their purposes. e.g. wood, brick, plastic. We will also be investigating what materials are strong, waterproof and comfortable to make a shoe

 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development- We will be focusing on how to be kind and what makes a good friend.
 

Week commencing  18th January 2016

What we are learning this week:

English / ICT -  This week in English we will be learning to write an email to the troll from the story 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'. We will be learning to type using the computer keyboard and ipad. We will share our ideas to tell the troll how to be a good friend

 

Phonics -  In phonics we are consolidating and checking that we know all of the words and sounds from phase two and will continue to practise using them to read and write cvc, cvcc words and simple sentences.

 

Maths- In maths we will be learning to use positional and directional language using the Bee Bots.

 

Personal, Social and Emotional Development- We will be focusing on the characters feelings, reasons and seeing things from a different point of view.

 

Week commencing  22nd November 2015

What we are learning this week:

English- This week in English we will be reading a traditional tale 'The three little pigs'. We will be learning to retell the story and sequence the events through story mapping. We will be doing lots of role play to act out and tell the story in our own words.
 

Phonics - In phonics we will continue to focus on blending the sounds s, a , t, p, d,  i, n, m. We will use these sounds to make 2 and 3 letter words.
 

Maths- In maths we will be learning to count and add two sets of objects. We will begin to look at simple number sentences using + and =`

 

Science- We will learn about the names and properties of different materials and some of their purposes. e.g. wood, brick, plastic
 

Week commencing 16th November 2015

What we are learning this week:

English- This week in English we will be focusing on non-fiction text about animals that lay eggs. On Tuesday  we have a special visitor coming to our school to show us lots of animals and insects including a tarantula, water dragon and a python! We will learn about their lifecycle including where they live and what they like to eat. We will use our phonic knowledge to write their names and label the different part of the animals. E.g. legs, scales, tongue.
 

Phonics - In phonics we are focusing on the sounds i,n,m,d and the key words is, it, in, an, I.
 

Maths- In maths we will be learning to use positional language to describe the position of an object. E.g. above, behind, on top of...
Later on in the week we will be using Bee Bots to practise using directional language. E.g. straight ahead, left, right. 

 

Geography- In geography we will learn how to read and use simple maps. We will also practice making our own maps to share with our friends.

 

Week commencing 9th November 2015

What we are learning this week:

English- This week in English we will be developing our imaginative skills. On Monday morning we are going to make an exciting discovery in the woods. We will then focus on generating and sharing our ideas on what we have found. We will talk about our ideas and then communicate them through drawing and writing.

 

Phonics - In phonics we are focusing on the sounds i,n,m,d and the key words is, it, in, an, I.
 

Maths- In maths we will be working in groups with different focuses. These will include matching numeral and quanities, finding one more than with numbers between 1-10 and one more than beyond 10.

 

RE- In RE we will be learning about the Hindu festival of Diwali. We will learn about how Hindu's prepare for and celebrate the festival. We will be making our own diva lights and create patterns using coloured sand.

 

Music- In music we will be exploring ways of making sounds that represent fireworks. We will also be listening to some music linked with the festival of Diwali.

PSHE - On Friday we will be fundraising for BBC Children in Need by baking biscuits. We will talk about the rights and needs of children all around the world and will learn how the money we raise will go towards supporting these children. You can also show your support by buying the biscuits we make or taking part in 'The Great Pentland Bake Off'. (Ask in school for more info!)

 

Week Commencing 19th October 2015

What we are learning this week:
English - This week we will be looking at non-fiction books about Autumn. We will be using our senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch and smell) to describe autumn. We will also be taking part in lots of autumn activities to help us understand the change in seasons.

 

Maths - In maths we will continue to focus on numbers. We will be learning to order numbers from 1 to 10 and selecting the correct number of objects to represent each number.

 

Music - We will be learning about the different sounds linked with weather and autumn. We will identify the different sounds that we can hear and try to recreate some of these sounds with our instruments e.g. crunchy leaves, rain drops, wind.
 

Week Commencing 12th October 2015

What we are learning this week:

English - This week we will be learning about non -fiction books. We will use them to learn about 'people who help us' e.g. police officers, fire fighters, dentists and doctors. We will learn to match and label some of the equipment police officers use.

We will also continue to work on learning to recognise and write our own names with and without name cards.
In phonics we are continuing to learn the sounds s, a, t, p, i , n, m and d. This week we will be focusing on oral blending and segmenting activities.

Maths - In maths we will be focusing on number. We will be learning to form our numbers correctly and continue to practice touch counting and matching numbers to the correct number of objects. 

 

RE - In R.E we will be learning about things that are special to us and our friends. We will learn what the word 'special' means.

Music - we will be learning about the different sounds linked with the theme 'people who help us'. We will identify the different sounds that we can hear and link them to the right people. We will try to recreate some of these sounds e.g. the siren on a police car using instruments.

 

 

Week commencing 28th September 2015

What we are learning this week:
English - This week we will be reading and focusing on the text 'The Jolly postman'. We will use the book to develop our understanding of people who help us and giving meaning to the marks we make through letter writing.

 

Maths - To begin with we will continue to focus on our counting skills for example touch counting and saying one number name for each item. Later on in the week we will begin to focus on ordering objects by size such as small, medium and large.

 

Physical Development- We will be continue to focus on managing our own needs throughout the school day,  including feeling confident in choosing and eating at lunchtime. We will also be doing a lot of work on our fine motor control.

 

 
Week commencing 21st September 2015

What we are learning this week:
English (Reading/writing) - This week we will focus on being able to hold our pencils correctly as well as accurate letter formation. We will continue to explore and understand what makes each one of us unique and special. We will  to learn to read/recognise our own names and the names of those in our class.

 

Maths - This week will involve the children being able to recite numbers 1 to 10 and then 1 to 20.  Children will also learn to recognise and begin to write numerals 1-5 and beyond.

How you can help at home

 

  • Support your child to complete their homework each and ensure that it is handed in to Mrs Denney or Mrs Bibi
  • Reading regularly with your child at home and writing a comment in their reading diary.
  • Questioning what they have read to help them understand the text.
  • Talking to your child about their day at school - What have they enjoyed? What have they been learning about?
  • Reminding your child to bring their PE kits and book bags to school.
