Year 1 - Class Basil
Please view this page for all the home school learning resources for the Year 1 Class Basil.
Hello everybody, we hope you are all ok. We are continuing with our Superheroes topic, for this week's home learning challenges please see the suggested timetable of activities below. You should have already received your paper packs and be ready to go.
We have also put two activities on Purple Mash for you to do each day.
New books have been allocated on Rising Stars and we recommend that you practise reading together everyday as this will make a huge difference.
Each week there will also be some games to play on Spelling Shed which will help you practise your weekly spellings.
If you have any concerns or need to ask any questions send an email to year1@pentlandinf.co.uk. You can also share photographs of completed work on here too, it would be lovely to see how you are getting on with your work at home.
Please take care everybody and remember to prioritise yours and your family's well-being. In terms of school work try and do as much as you can based on your own situation and personal circumstances. And remember your children are Superheroes too.......

Week beginning 11th January
English
This week we are having a fairy tale theme and inparticular we are focusing on the story of Cinderella. The children watched the pantomime of Cinderella before the holiday, ask them to tell you about what they can remember about the show. They could draw their favourite character and write about why s/he is their favourite and/or maybe they could have a go at writing the story.
In the story Cinderella's fairy godmother grants her a wish. If your child were to choose a wish, what would they wish for and why? Encourage your child to use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in their writing.
Phonics
There are some really good letters and sounds video lessons for your child to watch on the following website.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuGr6z2H2KNHY2HITC9jV0a65ED0aD2Ry
The majority of the children in our class are beginning Phase 5 phonics and we suggest they watch the Year 1 Autumn term lessons 31 - 45. Autumn Term Year 1 lessons - YouTube
We would recommend watching one video per day to help maintain the children's progress in phonics.
If you feel that these are a little bit tricky for your child they could watch Autumn term Reception lessons 40 - 50. (5609) Lesson 40 (part 1) - Reception - YouTube
Spellings
Encourage your child to practise their weekly spellings by playing some games on Spelling Shed.
EdShed Web Game - Spelling Shed and MathShed
Maths
This week will be a revision week of 2D and 3D shapes. Here is a link to a lovely 2D shape song that we have watched before with children in school. It's one of those songs that will stay in your head and you'll probably be singing it all day!
The 2D shape song - KS1 Maths - BBC Bitesize
Discuss and name 2D shapes with your child and see if you can spot any around the house. Encourage your child to count how many sides each shape has. We refer to 2D shapes as flat shapes and 3D shapes as solid shapes.
The 3D shape song - KS1 Maths - BBC Bitesize
Discuss and name 3D shapes with your child and see if you can spot any around the house. Encourage your child to count how many faces each shape has.
There are also some brilliant Year 1 daily maths video lessons available on the home learning section of the White Rose Maths website.

We would recommend watching one video per day to help maintain the children's progress in maths.
Topic
Why not encourage your child to have a go at designing and making their own magic wand or a carriage using recycled materials which could be used to take Cinderella to the ball?
In school we check in daily with the children about how they are feeling and they select an emoji that best represents this. Talk to your child about how they are feeling. This is a strange time for all of us and not really the start to the new year that we were expecting. Your child will probably be missing their friends and be upset about not coming back to school. Here is a link to some short videos that may make it easier for your child to discuss their feelings. It’s OK not to be OK! - Oak National Academy (thenational.academy)
Make sure your child is keeping fit and healthy even though they can't go out very much. You could choose a Joe Wicks workout to do or maybe play a game of dodgeball with them, this is one of the children's favourite games in PE. On Wednesday Marcus Rashford is the Celebrity Supply Teacher on CBBC at 10:05am, why not encourage your child to do a workout with him?
Week beginning 4th January
English
This week we will be writing our own ‘Winter’ acrostic poems (where each line of poetry starts with a specific letter and those letters if read downwards spell a word).
We will also be reading the story ‘Snowflake Mistake’ by Lou Treleaven.
BBC iPlayer - CBeebies Bedtime Stories - 608. Suranne Jones - The Snowflake Mistake

This week we will be a revision week where the children can practise their addition and subtraction skills. We will also be learning the months of the year and their order. The children will be learning how and when people celebrate the new year and watching the 2021 firework displays from London and Dubai.
We will also be going on a Winter senses walk. The children will also have the opportunity to develop their creative and fine motor skills by making paper snowflakes.
