Nursery - Class Lowry AM

Welcome to Class Lowry!

 

Information about Class Lowry:

We are morning Nusery. Our teachers are Mrs Bell, Miss Hussain and Miss Shaikh. We start school at 8.45 and finish at 11.45.

What you need to know:

 

Please help your child to remember their book bags everyday. We will change books twice throughout the week.

Special Events or Days:

 

Monday 18th July - EYFS Sports Day. All morning nursery children to attend in the afternoon for this day to take part in sports day

Summer Term 2 

 

Week commencing 11th July

This week we will be finishing our work on the story of the 'Naughty Bus' and we are very excited to go on our school trip on a big red vintage bus. The bus is going to take us to Charlotte's Ice Cream Parlour, where we will have time to play in the playground, see the animals and have an ice cream. Keep an eye out for the photographs, both in class and on the website. After our trip, we will be using the photographs as speaking and listening prompts to help us to talk in greater detail about what we did. We will also be drawing pictures to show our adventure.

 

Week commencing 27th June 

This week we will be continuing to learn about the story of the 'Naughty Bus'. We will be re-telling the story and using extended sentences to talk about our favourite part of the story. 

 

In maths we will be using the theme of the 'Naughty Bus' to help us to practise number recognition and matching numeral and quantity. We will be using our very own 'naughty bus' to put the correct quantity of passengers onto.

 

​In phonics we will be continuing to practise recognising different sounds, using the Jolly Phonics songs and actions to help us. We will identifying the initial sound in words and some of us will be blending together different sounds to help us to read simple words

 

Week commencing 20th June 

This week we will be continuing to observe the cress seeds that we planted last week. We will continue to think about how best to look after them and talking about the different changes that are happening and why. We will be introducing the story of 'The Naughty Bus' which is a story all about a red bus who goes on an adventure...

 

In maths we will be looking at using scales to compare 2 objects to find out which is the heaviest and which is the lightest.

 

In phonics we will continue to think about the initial sound in words and using the jolly phonics actions and songs to help us to recognise the different letters and their sounds.

 

Week commencing 13th June 

This week we will be learning all about things that grow. We will be looking at non-fiction books to teach us the different things that we need to do when planting seeds. We will then plant our very own cress seeds and think about the different things that we need to do to help them to grow. We will observe the seeds to find out what happens to them.

 

In maths we will be continuing to practise recognising numbers to 10. We will then ensure that we can count out the correct quantity of objects when given a specific number.

 

Week commencing 7th June 

We will be starting the week by sharing our holiday news. We will be practising using sentences including the words and, because or then to make our sentences more interesting. We will then be practising drawing a picture to show something that we have done in the holidays. 

 

In maths we will be consolidating our knowledge on 2d shapes. We will be naming the different common 2d shapes, talking about the properties that the shapes have and talking about the different shapes that we can see in the environment.

 

In phonics we will be continuing to recognise different sounds and think of words that begin with those sounds.

 

Summer Term 1 - The Ugly Duckling

 

Week commencing 23rd May

This week we will be finishing learning all about the story of 'The Ugly Duckling'. We will be making masks to use to help us to re-tell the story in our own words. Through our story times we will be continuing to develop our questioning and prediction skills by thinking about why different characters behave in different ways and what we think may happen next.

 

In maths we will be continuing to practise counting and recognising numbers to 10. We will be working on recognising numbers and then counting out the correct quantity of objects to match the numeral.

 

In phonics we will be continuing to listen and say the initial sounds in words and orally blending words

 

Week commencing 9th May

This week we will be continuing to learn all about the story of 'The Ugly Duckling'. We will be re-telling the story and then using pictures to help us to sequence the events of the story.

 

In maths we will be counting out objects to 10. We will continue to practise recognising numbers to 10 and putting them in order to create our own number line. We will then practise matching the numeral with the correct quantity of objects.

 

Week commencing 2nd May

This week we will be continuing to observe the changes that are happening with the living eggs. We will be talking about what has happened to the living eggs and creating our own 'life cycle of a hen' as part of our understanding of the world lessons. We will also be looking at the best way to look after the chicks and why this is important. 

 

In maths we will be using positional language such as on top, underneath, behind and next to to describe where different objects are.

 

Week commencing 25th April

This week we will be taking part in science week. We will be attending the Science Boffins assembly and then carrying out practical enquiry to answer our science question.

 

We will spend lots of time looking at the living eggs and talking about what we think may be inside the eggs. We will be using this as a speaking and listening stimulus to help us to extend our sentences, using words like and or because to make our sentences more exciting. We will be watching out for the living eggs hatching to find out what is inside.

 

In maths we will be continuing to practise recognising numbers to 10 and then counting out a specific amount of objects or actions to go with the numbers.

 

Week commencing 18th April

This week we will be continuing our work on 'The Ugly Duckling'. We will be learning to re-tell the story, using actions to help us. In PSED we will be talking about the actions of the different characters throughout the story and the effect that they have on the duckling.

 

In maths we will be looking at different 2d shapes. We will be learning rhymes to help us to remember the names of the shapes and their properties. We will be going on shape hunts around school to see what shapes we can find in the envornment.

 

Week commencing 11th April

At the beginning of the week we will be talking about and drawing pictures to show what we have been doing in the holidays. We will then be looking at the story of 'The Ugly Duckling'. When reading the story we will talk about how we hold books correctly, pointing at the words as we read. The children will predict what they think may happen next throughout the story and talk about how the duckling may be feeling throughout.

 

In maths we will continue to practise recognising numbers to 10 and counting out the correct quantity of objects.

 

Spring term 2 - The Elves and the Shoemaker

 

Week commencing 14th March 

At the weekend the Elves have been busy painting their Elf door. We will be receiving exciting letters from the Elves and thinking of ways that we can communicate with them and different ways that we can help them. We will be finding lots of exciting Elf objects and these will be used as speaking as listening prompts. We will be practising saying our ideas as sentences and beginning to use the words because, and to extend our sentences

 

In maths we will be continuing to practise recognising numbers to 10 and counting out the correct number of objects to match each numeral.

 

Week commencing 7th March 

This week we will be continuing our work on the story 'The Elves and the Shoemaker'. Last week we discovered that the Elves were living behind our door in the classroom but are too scared to come out. This week we will be thinking of different questions that we would like to find out about the Elves and sending the questions to the Elves. We will then be waiting to see if the Elves reply.

 

In maths we will be learning about size ordering. We will be using shoes and other objects to compare sizes and use words such as longer, shorter, medium, the same size

 

Week commencing 29th February 

As part of our work on 'The Elves and the Shoemaker' we will be finding a magical door in our classroom this week. We will be spending time thinking about what could be behind the door and drawing pictures to show our ideas. Throughout the week we will receive a letter to find out who lives behind the door. 

 

In maths we will be practising our counting skills by counting out different groups of objects. We will be continuing to develop our understanding that even if a group of objects have been moved, there will still be the same quantity.

 

Week commencing 22nd February

This week we will be beginning to look at the story of 'The Elves and the Shoemaker'. We will be using makaton actions to help us to remember the different characters and the order of the story.

 

In maths we will be using numicon to help us to count out up to 10. We will then be counting a group of objects and understanding that the quantity is still the same, even if the objects have been moved. We will be continuing to recognise numbers to 10.

 

 

Spring term 1 - The 3 Billy Goats Gruff

 

Week commencing 1st February

This week we will be using our puppet theatre and puppets to help us to re-tell the story of 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff'.

 

In maths we will be practising counting out various different objects and thinking about matching the objects with the corresponding numeral.

 

In Understanding the World we will be incorporating the recent work we have done on ice and colour mixing. The chldren will be given 2 ice cubes of different colours and will be predicting what colour their ice cubes will melt into and where they could put their ice to make it melt quicker.

 

Week commencing 18th January

This week we will be continuing to learn about the story of 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff'. We will be using musical instruments to help us to re-tell the story, by choosing which sound we think goes best with each part of the story.

 

In maths we will be practising counting to 10. We will be working on recognising numbers to 10 and matching the numeral with the correct quantity.

 

In understanding the world we will be looking at ice and talking about how it is formed. We will be finding out what will happen to ice if we leave it in different places around the nursery.

 

Week commencing 11th January

This week we will be continuing to learn all about the story of 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff'. We will be learning to re-tell the story, using the actions to help us. We will be using the story to talk about the kind things that we do for each other and how to be a kind friend.

 

In maths we will be talking about size, sorting objects into 'big', 'small' and 'medium'. We will then begin to order objects by size.

 

Week commencing 4th January

This week we will be carrying out speaking and listening activities relating to the things we have done over the holidays. We will then begin our half term topic of 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff'. We will be reading the story, along with the makaton actions.

 

In maths we will be practising counting to 10, recognising the numbers to 10 and counting out the correct number of objects for a particular number

 

 

Autumn term 2

 

Week commencing 7th December

This week we will be finishing learning all about the story of 'The Enormous Turnip'. We are now very good at re-telling the story, using the actions to help us. We will continue to practise talking about the different characters in the story and sequencing the order that the characters appear in the story. In the story the turnip came out of the ground because all of the characters worked together to get it out. We will be talking about the importance of working together and of being a good friend.

 

In maths we will be learning all about positional language. We will begin to use words such as on top, underneath, next to and behind to describe where objects are.

 

Week commencing 30th November

This week we will be continuing to learn all about the story of 'The Enormous Turnip', using makaton actions to help us to re-tell the story from memory. We will be using puppets to re-tell the story in our puppet theatre.

 

In maths we will be matching numerals and quantities together using seeds and plant pots. We will be practising reading numbers to 10 and then counting out the correct number of seeds.

 

We will be continuing with phase 1 phonics by listening carefully to different sequences of sounds using body percussion and then repeating them

 

Week commencing 23rd November

This week we will be introducing the children to the story "The Enormous Turnip". We will be learning to re-tell the story using the words and the makaton actions.

 

In maths we will be looking at common 2d shapes and talking about the shape names. We will be going on a shape walk around school where we will look out to see what shapes we can see in the environment.

 

We will also be continuing with our 'listening games' by listening carefully to the musical instruments being played and repeating the sequence of sounds.

 

Week commencing 16th November

This week we will be continuing to think about what could be inside our mystery egg. We will look at different creatures that come from eggs and discuss what we think is inside and why.

 

We are very excited about the special visitors that we are having in school on Tuesday morning. 'Meet a Creature' will be coming into school and bringing along some of their creatures. The children will be invited to look at (and even touch) the creatures. We will then watch how the creatures move and begin to think of how we can move in the same way. An example of some of the creatures that may join us are: snakes, lizards, tarantula's and giant snails.

 

In maths we will be continuing to practise counting out objects to 10.

 

 

Week commencing 9th November

This week we will be making a very special discovery in our playground. Come back later in the week to find out what we have discovered...

 

In maths we will be looking at the size of different objects. We will be using words such as 'big' and 'small'.

 

We will be continuing to practise our phonics 'listening games' in small groups. We will be listening very carefully to different sounds to try and work out what objects could be making the sound.

 

On Thursday we will be learning all about Diwali, the festival of light. We will be celebrating by making our very own Diva lamps.

 

On Friday we will be  icing buns to help to raise money for Children in Need.

 

 

Week commencing 19th October

This week we will be finishing our worrk on the story 'The Gingerbread Man'. We will be using what we learnt last week about how to bake a Gingerbread Man to help us make our very own Gingerbread Men. We will be baking our Gingerbread Men on Monday and Tuesday, talking about what is happening to the mixture as we add the different ingredients and what will happen when we put our Gingerbread Men in the oven. On Wednesday we will be decorating our Gingerbread Men, whilst we are decorating them we will be talking about the different parts of the body.

 

In small groups we will be continuing with our 'listening games', where we are learning to discriminate between different sounds and experiment with different objects to find out what sounds they make.

 

Week commencing 12th October

This week we will be continuing our work on the story 'The Gingerbread Man'. We are getting very good at re-telling the story now and we are enjoying acting out the story in our Role Play area and using the puppets in our Small World area.

 

In maths we are going to be looking at numbers. We will begin by focussing on the numbers 1 and 2. We will be counting out the correct quantity of objects and thinking of different actions that we can do that number of (for example: claps, jumps, hops).

 

We will be taking part in sponsored 'Readthon' activities on Monday 12th October

 

Week commencing 5th October

This week we will be continuing to learn about the story of 'The Gingerbread Man'. We will be practising our skills of re-telling the story, using different actions to help us. We will be using the characters of the story in the puppet theatre to help us with re-telling the story.

 

We will be using the characters of the story to help us learn positional language such as 'on top, next to and inside'.

 

Week commencing 28th September 2015

This week we will begin to develop the children's speaking and listening skills by talking about Eid and encouraging the children to talk about the different ways that they celebrated it.

 

On Tuesday we will be having our Eid party in the morning and the afternoon Nursery will be joining us so that we can all enjoy the party together.

 

This week we will be introducing the story 'The Gingerbread Man' to the children. We will be making lots of actions up to go with the story and will be encouraging the children to join in with the actions and also with the repeated sections of the story.

 

We will be using the story 'The Gingerbread Man' to help us to count out objects to 5.

 

Week commencing 21st September 2015

This week we will be talking about the different feelings that we have and trying to identify how we are feeling every day. We will do this through singing our 'hello' song.

 

We will be beginning to develop children's speaking and listening skills. We will be showing children objects and prompts to stimulate talk in small groups, encouraging children to talk about what they can see, some children will be challenged to use more than one word when answering a question.

 

Throughout the week we will be continuing to encourage the children to experiment with playing in the different areas and with the different activities that are available.

 

Week commencing 14th September 2015

This week we will be continuing to encourage the children to explore and devleop their skills in the different areas and using the equipment that we have in class, both in and outdoors.

 

As part of our topic 'Myself and my family', we will be encouraging children to talk about the different members of their family. The children will be working both as a whole class and in key worker groups to develop their skills of speaking and listening. We will also be thinking about and discussing the different parts of our bodies and faces. We will be using mirrors and different materials to create pictures of our faces and we will be singing songs about our bodies, such as 'Heads, shoulders, knees and toes'.

 

You can help your child at home by talking about the different parts of their bodies and the way that we use them.
