We had a great day with many exciting activities and a chance to explore the many sculptures on display at the park. The children and their families enjoyed searching for bugs, creating their own large and small sculptures and listening to the year 1 children’s sounds in the hidden forest. The Year 1 children took part in a music presentation of the work they have been doing in school with Duncan the musician and I know you would like to join us in thanking the staff at Yorkshire Sculpture Park for helping to organising and run the activities.

Tolerance and Respect Themed Workshop for Children

On Monday 8th May 2017 the children took part in a series of mini-workshop activities to explore the themes of: ‘Words can Hurt,’ ‘My Good Friend’ and ‘Respect.’ These all help children develop the skills and attitudes of tolerance and respect, thereby giving them a good foundation to develop good and respectful relationships within school and the wider community. These are just one way in which we promote Prevent and British Values in school.

Prevent Worshops for Parents

There is a ladies group that meet together informally with the Local Authority Prevent Team Officers on a Thursday morning at 9am in the Sure Start Centre next to our school. They take part in a series of activities, including cooking, and discuss a range of issues. Please come along; everyone is welcome.

End of Day

As outlined in a letter earlier this term, the school is unfortunately not in a position to change the school finishing time. However, as an alternative to support parents, the governors have decided to part finance an After School care option. The school will invest as much budget as possible in securing staff to run this, but there will need to be a small charge for parents in order to make it sustainable. This will now begin after the Easter holidays from 2nd May 2017.

Should parents be unable to collect their child at 3pm, they can opt to put them in the After School provision, which will run until 3.30pm at a charge of 50p per day. Parents will need to apply for a place within this and indicate which days they require the service. Please speak to Mrs Valli in the school office to arrange this.

The school will also retain capacity within the club to accommodate a small number of children in case there are any who remain uncollected after 3.10pm. These children will automatically be moved into the after school provision and a charge of 50p will be made to their parents.

The governors have worked hard to find a compromise solution to help parents and hope that this will ease the situation for those that are experiencing difficulties.

Friends of Pentland - Creative Workshop

Friends of Pentland would like to invite all parents to come and create some beautiful pieces of artwork. The artwork will be displayed at the school and in the local community and will be created using recycled materials. This workshop will run for three weeks on Tuesday mornings between 9.00 and 11.00 and all parents are invited to attend.

The first workshop will be on Tuesday 25th April 2017.We hope to see you there!

Egg Decorating Winners 2017

It was very difficult to judge this year’s competition; there were so many fabulous creations. Mrs Gerrard, our School Governor, had a tough job to do.

We know the children, staff and parents will make her feel very welcomed as she settles in.

Goodbye for now to Mrs Denney

Mrs Denney is leaving us to go on Maternity Leave on Friday 7th April. We will miss her but wish her lots of happy times with her new baby. We know she will make a great mum!

Welcome to Miss Akhtar

We are happy to announce that we have Miss Akhtar joining us after the Easter holiday until the end of the summer term to take over teaching in Mrs Denney’s class. She has already been into school to meet the children and has had meetings with Mrs Denney to ensure a smooth transition for the children. Egg Decorating Competition

We are so pleased and surprised by the wonderful entries into last year’s egg decorating competition, that we thought we would run one again this year!

Can you think of an imaginative way to decorate an egg? Could you paint a beautiful pattern or turn it into a superhero or a wild animal?

What to do:

Boil an egg for ten minutes

Let it cool

Paint or decorate it

Bring it to school for our display

(Remember to handle your egg carefully; you don’t want it to crack!)

We will display all the eggs in school and on Thursday 6th April, we will ask some of our governors and the school council to choose six overall winners, who will each receive a chocolate Easter Egg prize.

Asthma Assembly/Briefing for Parents: delivered by the school nursing team

Thursday 6th April 2017: 9am in the school hall

We have a growing number of children within school who have been diagnosed with Asthma. Staff work hard to ensure that all children’s health needs are met and supported. This works best when it is done in partnership with parents.

School staff have recently received training from the School Nurses and we felt it was important for parents to receive the same information. Please come along and hear the latest advice, some risk factors to look out for and guidance as to how to keep your child safe and well. There will be opportunity to ask the nursing team any questions you may have.

The chicks are back!

Living Eggs will be returning to school on Monday the 27th March and will be with us for 10 days. Over the last few years, the children have really enjoyed the chicks visit. Through this visit the children are able to witness the chicks hatching from eggs and growing in size over the 10 days they are with us. The children and staff get the opportunity to observe the chicks, learn about the life cycle and learn how to take care of them.

Friday 24th March 2017

 Pentland Comedy Show

To celebrate Red Nose Day this year, we held our own Pentland Comedy Show. The children came in non-uniform and learnt a joke to tell to their class. Each class voted for the 2 jokes that made them laugh the most. The 2 people chosen from each class told their jokes in the afternoon comedy assembly, for the whole school to enjoy. The comedy show was a huge success and the children were brilliant in delivering very funny jokes.

A big thank you to everyone who donated money for Comic Relief.  All the money collected will be given to the Red Nose charity, which helps to improve people’s lives both in the UK and Africa.

We raised £85

Safety Notice from West Yorkshire Fire Service

‘We would like to remind parents and carers to always read and follow the instructions carefully when using chemical insecticide products, typically sold in chemists, to treat head lice. This is because these treatments contain flammable elements. You should not therefore use hair dryers, or any other ignition source such as matches, lighters and candles near anyone during the treatment process whilst the product is being used. This advisory note follows a recent incident in West Yorkshire in which a child’s hair was accidentally set alight during treatment resulting in the child sustaining serious injuries.’

Internet Safety Assembly - Monday 13th February 2017

This week is Online Safety Week and the children have been learning about how to keep safe when using the computers. They have talked about which games are suitable to be playing online, what to do if a stranger contacts them, when they should and shouldn't be using a computer or tablet, what to do if something worries them online, computer security and sharing information online. The children would like to share what they have learnt with their parents through an Internet Safety Assembly on Monday 13th February. During the assembly each class will do a presentation on one aspect of online safety which they have been learning about in class. We hope you can come and listen to the  children's message about Internet Safety.
