Reception - Julia Donaldson 2018-2019
ClassL Julia Donaldson
Julia Donaldson MBE is best known for her popular rhyming stories for children, especially 'The Gruffalo', 'Room on the Broom' and 'Stickman'. We will be sharing lots of her fabulous books throughout the year.
Our teachers are Mrs McAlonan and Mrs Bibi. There are 21 children in our class. We play and learn very closely with our friends in the other Reception class 'Class Trish Cooke'.
We are looking forward to working together to help your children to achieve their best and have an exciting year. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day. Please do not hesitate to come into school and talk to a member of our team if you any questions or concerns.
Home learning links
Here are some useful website links that you can use to help your children at home. There are sections within each of these websites aimed at Early Years/Reception children and we sometimes use them in school.
Week Commencing 11th December 2018
Communication, Language and Literacy
This week we will be looking at the book ‘The Snowman’ by Raymond Briggs. In the book, James builds a snowman in the garden and wakes up in the night to find that it has come to life. He shows the Snowman his house, and in return the Snowman takes him on a magical journey. The book has no words so we will be encouraging our children to retell the story in their own words.
Our PE day is on Friday. Please leave your child's PE kit in school everyday.
The children will continue to develop their fine motor skills by using a range of finger gym activities. We will be encouraging the children to get changed into their PE kits independently. If you could continue to encourage independent dressing / undressing at home it would be much appreciated.
Personal, Social and Emotional development
We will be giving our children lots of opportunities to play games together and to build joint storylines.
In mathematics the children will be introduced to subtraction. We will be teaching this skill by singing lots of songs, reading books and playing lots of games. We will also be practising our number recognition skills to 25 as we begin our daily snowman calendar.
Understanding the World
The children will be learning a little bit about the Christian celebration of Christmas and the Nativity story in preparation for our visit to Savile Town School on Wednesday. We will also be learning some festive songs for our performance at the end of term.
Expressive Art and Design
The children will have the opportunity to make their own snowman using lots of different materials.
How you can help at home
Encourage your child to read with expression.
Practise simple subtraction.
I have 4 biscuits, I eat one…..how many do I have left?
Ask the children to tell you about their trip to Savile Town?
