An Artistic, Cultural and Creative Year Ahead

 2015 - 2016                               

 

Using the creative arts and the outdoors to develop children’s speaking and listening skills in order to support attainment and progress in writing

 

This year is a particularly exciting year at Pentland Infant and Nursery School; teaching and learning is set to become even more creative than ever and we have a special cultural partner to help us with this – The Yorkshire Sculpture Park!

 

Following a successful application to CAPE UK, Pentland has been chosen to work alongside 24 other schools across Yorkshire and the Humber on a flagship programme using the Arts and Creativity to improve teaching and learning and contribute to the progress of pupils.

 

The project is aimed at developing innovative practice to help children develop their Literacy skills - Speaking and Listening and Writing. We want to ensure that all our children become confident in using these important skills and achieve to their highest potential.

 

Pentland has a commitment to using the outdoors as a resource and stimulus for learning.  We are very lucky to have a large school site, incorporating a large field and forest area. This project will enable us to explore how to maximise these facilities in as creative a way as possible.

 

Many of our children enter school speaking English as an additional language.  Through engagement with the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the artists, we are aiming to engage our children with a range of cultural experiences in order to enhance their thinking and communication skillsThis in turn will be used to help inform and develop their writing skills.

 

CAPE UK are investing £10,000 in each school to help this happen.  We will be using much of this money to fund trips to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and employ two artists to work with the children both there and in school.

 

This is such a wonderful opportunity for our children and we are looking forward to observing how the children respond and engage with this new type of learning.  We hope you will also enjoy reading about their work and achievements.
