During this workshop the children discovered that the company Bala sport were producing Fairtrade footballs. They learnt about the families making the footballs and all the benefits those families get from making Fairtrade products. These benefits include fair pay, free eye tests, health care, the provision of school stationary and scholarships. The children were shown the process of making a Bala football and discovered how children from poorer countries make their own footballs using newspapers, plastic bags and string. After the presentation, the children had the opportunity to make their own football. They had lots of fun scrunching up the newspapers, adding plastic bags to make it waterproof and got tied up trying to wrap the string around their footballs to hold it all together. The school councillors enjoyed this activity and decided to make footballs with the rest of their class back at school.
